The Human Resources Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Industrial Painter in the Fleet Division of the Finance Department. This recruitment may be used to establish an eligibility list for use to fill future vacancies.
Under general supervision, performs journey level work in the painting, finishing, and maintenance of a wide variety of interior and exterior surfaces, automotive coatings and structures; performs a variety of skilled work in preparing surfaces for painting, mixing paints, matching colors and applying, by brush or spray gun, all types of paint and protective coatings; advises in the selection and storage of painting materials; building repair and maintenance work and other related work as required.
This is a single, journey level class where employees perform the full range of skilled duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES: the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
- Performs lead-based paint abatement activities under the direction of assigned supervisor.
- Performs visual assessments and taking of paint-chip or dust samples in connection with the District’s lead-based paint abatement program.
- Receives and reviews work orders; prioritizes and schedules jobs; plans jobs including ordering of necessary supplies and materials; prepares necessary paperwork. Estimates labor and material needs and completes request orders for supplies and equipment.
- Paints surfaces with brushes, rollers, conventional sprayers and airless spray applications; maintains and repairs spray equipment.
- Performs general repair and maintenance work on District buildings and facilities which includes general carpentry work, painting, plumbing, installation of doors and windows, and/or pouring and finishing concrete. Ensures compliance with building codes. Applies paint, varnishes, stains, lacquers, epoxy, water-based automotive coatings, urethanes, and enamels.
- Prepares, primes, sands, seals, patches and paints structures, tools, buildings, fixtures, piping, tanks, equipment, fabricated metal and steel, facilities and surfaces utilizing all types of painting materials.
- Operates, cleans, and maintains all painting equipment, including but not limited to brushes, tools, sprayers and other painting apparatus.
- Operates and maintains a Grade D compressed air breathing system, and respiratory protection equipment.
- Performs surface preparation work using a variety of hand and power tools including water blasters, sand blasting equipment, power and hand tools.
- Safely operates and maintains equipment necessary for the performance of duties, including operating and maintaining a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment related to the painting trade; maintains shop area in neat and safe condition. Safely handle, label and store all materials and painting supplies.
- Works collaboratively with outside vendors and contractors in identifying unusual problems with the resurfacing of District facilities and buildings.
- Maintains appropriate service and repair records. Monitors and keeps records of hazardous waste materials. Tracks and complies with all requirements of Air Quality Management District operating permits.
- Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other District employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
