Distinguishing Career Features
The Head Custodian performs and/or leads custodial and general maintenance duties usually at assigned site with responsibility for the efficient use of staff, supplies, equipment and time to provide optimum service. Incumbent is recognized as a very skilled custodial worker who may delegate routine, non-urgent, or relatively straightforward tasks and may personally perform work when a thorough, practical knowledge of custodial techniques or an added level of skill is required. Competence and thoroughness are most important to insure pleasant, safe and sanitary working conditions for District staff, students and the general public. Head Custodians generally work at a single site (with some exceptions). Advancement to Head Custodian requires a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Custodian II and demonstrated skills and abilities in light maintenance, prioritizing work assignments, working independently, and communicating effectively with Custodians on different shifts. |

- Knowledge and Skills
The position requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in custodial care and routine facilities maintenance. Requires a thorough knowledge of the buildings and grounds of the assigned site. Requires working knowledge of the cleaning agents and chemicals used in cleaning, including mixing, reactions, proper use, and storage. Requires working knowledge of work hazards and safe work techniques, including lifting procedures. Requires knowledge of the security and safety required at a school site and proper procedures for identifying unauthorized people or unsafe facilities. Requires basic knowledge of common fixture, plumbing, and electrical repairs. Requires sufficient reading and writing ability to read work instructions and document work activity onto standardized forms. Requires sufficient human relations skill to train Custodians and exercise courtesy when dealing with others. |

Requires the ability to perform the essential duties of the position with limited supervision. Requires the ability to prioritize and organize work routines and special assignments to meet timelines and deadlines. Must be able to observe all safety precautions and procedures. Must be able to operate and maintain tools and equipment in a working condition. Requires the ability to perform routine maintenance tasks and to be able to determine when to refer more complex maintenance requirements to a supervisor. Must have the ability to give general work training and guidance to other Custodians. Must be able to follow oral and written directions. Must be able to work independently and collaboratively. Must be able to apply District policies and procedures. Must be able to respond to emergencies. |
- Physical Abilities
Incumbent must be able to function effectively indoors and outdoors engaged in work of primarily an active nature. Requires the ability to maintain cardiovascular fitness to engage in strenuous physical labor. Requires near visual acuity to write, to read directions and product labels, and to observe work in progress. Requires sufficient hearing and speech for verbal, telephone, and 2-way radio communication, to hear sound prompts from equipment, and to determine if equipment is functioning properly. Requires manual and finger dexterity to write and to clean and make minor equipment repairs. Requires the ability to lift (from overhead, waist and floor levels, max. 50 lbs.), carry, push and pull (up to 75 pounds, unassisted), bend, squat, reach, and twist and turn head and trunk to clean and to remove trash, move furniture and equipment. Requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time. |
- Education and Experience
Requires completion of high school as evidenced by reading and arithmetic skills and abilities; plus 3 years of custodial and routine maintenance experience and special training in safety and handling of hazardous materials. |
- Licenses and Certificates
Requires a valid Driver’s License and ability to get a First Aid Card or CPR certificate. |
Work Environment
Work is performed indoors and outdoors where significant health and safety considerations exist from physical labor and handling of materials that include waste and blood born pathogens. |
