JOB FAMILY SUMMARY PURPOSE:
Responsible for safe and efficient operation and maintenance of various pumps, motors, boilers, turbines, generators, and related activities as deemed necessary by the Shift Supervisor.
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Successful completion of an approved Power Plant Operator Apprenticeship Program or an equivalent training program.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Two (2) years experience as a power plant operator, with emphasis on conventional steam generating units and gas turbine-combined cycle units.
- Experience as an Electrician, Mechanic, or O&M technician preferred.
- Must pass a Human Performance Evaluation (HPE).
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Routinely monitors and logs plant equipment indicators to ensure safe, effective operation.
- Performs minor maintenance using basic hand tools and supports Crafts personnel during outages and planned maintenance activities.
- Opens, closes, and/or adjusts valves and powers up equipment.
- Monitors equipment motors, pumps, cooling towers, acid and phosphate feeders, fuel oil tanks, water wells, reverse osmosis systems, and other equipment by way of control systems and sensory observation.
- Operates chlorine, acid, phosphate, fuel oil, condenser, water well, city water makeup, water, treatment, and other plant equipment in accordance with safe operating practices.
- Assists and maintains communication with the Control Room Operator to ensure that processes are carried out correctly and efficiently.
- Wears protective clothing and safety equipment as required in performing job functions.
- Interprets and adheres to technical manual procedures and practices.
- Continuously trains to ensure an effective and efficient operation of equipment and functions.
- Adheres to the Company’s safety policies and procedures.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be in compliance with El Paso Electric Company’s Driving Policy.
- Complies with all applicable Company policies, procedures, and code of ethics as well as all applicable governmental laws and regulations including employment, safety, and environmental standards and regulations.
- Performs other related tasks that are not included but are within the context of duties defined.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The incumbents in this classification are subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and temperatures changes of extremely cold weather (below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour) and extreme heat (temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour); and exposed to loud noises, vibration, mechanical hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The incumbents are also subject to noise, causing the employee to shout in order to be heard.
PHYSICAL DEMAND:
- Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
