JOB SUMMARY PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Supervisor – Substation Construction or Maintenance is responsible for assisting the 1st class electricians with the general maintenance, repair, and/or construction of substation electrical components and equipment.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate with or without a reasonable accommodation that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of coursework in electricity and/or electronics from an accredited trade school or college preferred.
EXPERIENCE, MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Must be able to demonstrate ability to solve algebraic equations.
- Must be competent in using a computer.
- Must be able to read and comprehend instructional manuals, electrical schematics and drawings.
- Must be able to work at heights.
- Experience in a general capacity repairing or performing maintenance of electrical or electronic equipment and/or components preferred.
- Knowledge of basic electrical principles and standards, maintenance and repair procedures, welding equipment, and safety procedures and practices.
- Ability to repair and replace electrical and electronic components, operate hand and electrical tools and equipment, weld parts/components, maintain records and work under unusual conditions.
- Valid Driver's License and comply with the Company's Driving Policy; Department of Transportation (DOT) Certification or must obtain certification and pass DOT physical within six (6) months of date of employment.
- Must be able to obtain forklift certification within six (6) months of date of employment.
- Must sign the Pre-Apprenticeship Agreement and comply with its provisions.
- Must sign apprenticeship agreement after first year and complete 4 year apprenticeship requirements successfully.
- Availability to work, as needed, irregular or overtime hours.
- Required to live in the reporting service area, as defined in the agreement between El Paso Electric Company and IBEW Local 960 in Article VII Section 1E.
- Must pass a Human Performance Evaluation (HPE).
- Must pass pole climbing school within six (6) months of date of employment.
- Ability to communication effectively in both orally and in writing.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Installs, maintains, repairs and replaces various equipment, structures, components or oils in electrical substation equipment.
- Enters inspection data into laptop computers.
- Digs trenches, runs conduit wires control houses, runs and cadwelds ground grid wire, builds construction forms and pours concrete.
- Completes welding assignments on steel and other metals.
- Operates various types of equipment such as forklifts, Bobcats, bucket truck, boom/crane trucks, oil pumps, testers, etc. as permitted under working rules.
- Maintains tools and keeps work area, yard, truck and shop clean and in order.
- Stocks supplies, water, tools and other equipment on trucks.
- Work on energized circuits from 4kv to 24kv (rubber gloving) as permitted under working rules.
- Complies with all applicable Company policies, procedures and code of ethics as well as all applicable governmental laws and regulations to include employment, safety and environmental standards and regulations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- The incumbents in this classification are subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and temperatures changes of extreme cold weather (below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour) and extreme hot heat (temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour); and exposed to load noises, vibration, hazards, electrical current, high places, chemicals, atmospheric conditions, fumes, odors, mists, gases, poor ventilation, oils and other fluids, and poisonous plants and insects. Incumbents may be required to perform job functions at any time of the day or night.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Very heavy work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 60 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 30 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
