POSITION: HIV & Testing Counselor
RESPONSIBLITIES: HIV & Testing Counselor will report to HIV Program Manager. The HIV & Testing Counselor will be responsible for the daily activities and implementation of El Proyecto del Barrio Counseling and Testing Prevention Services. Will perform, document, and deliver HIV outreach material, provide HIV education referrals, and testing results to clients including pre and post counseling to high-risk individuals in the community. Responsible for linking positive clients to HIV care and services and referring clients to appropriate services, including partner services with the Division of HIV and STD (DHSP) Programs Los Angeles. Will perform outreach activities within the organization and in the community.
The HIV & Testing Counselor will perform data entry and assist with monthly reports regarding program activities. Will be responsible for intake, assessment, and education of new clients and provide support and guidance during intake, and linkage to HIV medical care, if necessary. Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with local referral agencies, hospitals, and other HIV service providers. Participate in monthly staff trainings/meetings, as well as other relevant community meetings. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to demonstrate a positive and professional image, cultural sensitive, and confidentiality in delivering results to clients. Mature judgment, tact, discretion and confidentiality are mandatory. Knowledge of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP and PEP); including medications, documentation forms, enrollment process, and up-to-date education. Responsible of creating and following referral protocol guidelines set by El Proyecto del Barrio and DHSP.
Must be knowledgeable of the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) and will need to complete ADAP course within 180 days of employment. Must be knowledgeable of HIV/AIDS, STI’s HIV, Hepatitis and Tuberculosis transmission and treatment. Knowledge of substance abuse issues and treatment, and related sexual risks.
HIV Test Counselor Certification must be obtained within 180 days of employment. Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to build rapport with clients.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a dependable automobile with insurance and a valid California Driver’s License. Must submit to and pass a urinalysis test, fitness for duty and background check as a pre-condition for employment. Must be able to submit proof of vaccinations for COVID-19 vaccination & Booster, Hepatitis B, MMR, and TDAP. Must provide recent TB/Chest x-ray test. First Aid/BLS Certification required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of one (1) year paid or volunteer experience in HIV and/or prevention intervention services. High school diploma and/or successful completion of GED. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Bilingual Spanish/English is required.
