The Position and Leadership Opportunity
El Pueblo Health Services (EPHS) seeks an experienced, relationship-based, and visionary leader to serve as its next Executive Director. The next leader will have the opportunity to build upon a significant period of growth to deliver the next level of community impact and systems improvement. The Executive Director (ED) will join a thriving, complex organization that has been recognized at the local, state, and national levels for its innovative community partnerships and impact.
The successful candidate will join and continue to foster a mission-centric and quality primary care organization, balance long-term investments with immediate community needs, and enhance communication while deepening collaboration amongst all stakeholders. They will also have an opportunity to foster understanding and connection to EPHS’ strategic goals, stories of impact, and overall mission to improve the health and wellness of New Mexicans living in its approximately 4,000 square mile service area. The ideal candidate for this role will be a proven leader with a strong ability to build trust and inspire others in pursuit of a shared vision.
About El Pueblo Health Services
Rooted in the community since 1976, El Pueblo Health Services, Inc. provides comprehensive family health care to the residents of Sandoval County, the town of Bernalillo and surrounding communities. Founded by a group of committed community members, the organization was granted nonprofit 501(c)(3) status in 1977. As an enduring nonprofit community health center, EPHS depends on various grant funds, insurance payments, and tax-deductible donations from the community. Recognition by the United States Health and Human Services department as a Federally Qualified Health Center Look Alike (FQHC-LAL) was achieved in 1991, a designation which is maintained to this day.
El Pueblo exists to assure that the residents of Sandoval County, the town of Bernalillo, and surrounding communities, have access to comprehensive family health care. More than 5000 patients are seen per year. All major health insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid. El Pueblo’s sliding scale fee structure assures that no one is denied access to care based on their ability to pay.
As the only primary care provider located within the town of Bernalillo for nearly 49 years, El Pueblo has served multiple generations of southern Sandoval County residents. In recent years, EPHS has expanded to include a second facility offering behavioral health, and a school-based health center located in Bernalillo High School.
Key Responsibilities of the Executive Director
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the overall leadership and management of day-to-day operations of all EPHS affairs. As an FQHC-LAL, its Board of Directors is a governing Board with a required 51% of its members also patients of the clinic. Taking direction from its Board, this person leads EPHS’s mission-centric and community-responsive strategic direction. The ED oversees the provider and leadership teams, ensuring that the mission of the organization is successfully achieved in a sustainable way. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead and manage strategic planning and implementation.
- Oversee operational processes, ensuring efficiency, productivity, and high-quality patient service delivery within the organization.
- Improve patient engagement, leads development and implementation of new strategies to increase patient encounters and center profitability.
- Develop and monitor performance indicators, identifying areas for improvement.
- Guides and participates in policy development/implementation
- Ensures regulatory compliance with federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the NM Department of Health, and other oversight entities.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment.
- Support recruiting, talent retention, and performance management processes.
- Participate in development of incentive plans for all employees.
- Assists in writing and development of grants, contracts, and other funding initiatives.
- Ensure robust fiduciary oversight through structures and staffing; ensure operating budget reflects organizational values and connects to strategic priorities.
- Lead C-Suite in charting a path through challenging legal, risk, and compliance matters and preservation of EPHS’s 501(c)(3) status.
- Partner with key stakeholders at the local, state, and national levels to leverage outside resources and investments to serve EPHS’s communities.
Skills and Expertise
- A minimum of 8 years of experience of executive leadership, ideally in non-profit and health center environments.
- Familiarity with Quickbooks desired.
- Demonstrated experience in leading organizational diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts and equity-focused strategies among key stakeholders.
- Strong commitment to civic engagement evidenced by significant board and community service.
- Proven ability to nurture and sustain relationships with employees, board members, elected officials, and nonprofit leaders to collaborate more effectively for shared outcomes.
- Data-driven; able to use data and information as a catalyst for action with the team and in the community to advance new ideas that are built to last.
- New Mexico and Sandoval County knowledge and experience is strongly preferred.
