CUSTODIAN DEFINITION Under supervision, to keep an assigned school building or office space clean and orderly; and to do related work as required. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Sweeps, scrubs, mops, strips, waxes, and polishes floors; vacuums rugs and carpets; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; washes windows and walls; cleans chalkboards; polishes metal work; cleans and makes minor repairs to custodial equipment to keep it in good working order; moves and arranges equipment and sets up auditorium or classrooms for special events or meetings; makes minor repairs of a non-technical nature; replaces lights; adjusts shades, blinds, desks, and other furniture; cleans venetian blinds; raises and lowers flag; unlocks and locks doors and gates; sets alarm system. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: The basic methods, supplies, and tools used in custodial work. Ability to: Learn rapidly the schedules, procedures, and equipment used in custodial work; work well with those contacted in the course of the work, and exhibit willingness to cooperate with faculty and other co-workers; perform general custodial and simple maintenance work; use common electrical cleaning equipment; perform moderately heavy manual labor; understand and carry out oral and written directions.
