Electric Motor & Contracting Co., Inc., founded in 1960, is one of the largest independently owned repair facilities for electrical rotating machinery. We are seeking an experienced 1st Class Submersible Pump Technician with a strong background in electrical rotating equipment to join our team in Chesapeake, Virginia. This position requires a skilled individual with in-depth knowledge of motor-driven pumps, mechanical and electrical components, and troubleshooting methods.
Job Summary and Key Responsibilities:
- Disassemble, troubleshoot, and reassemble various types of motor-driven pumps, ensuring all parts are inspected and maintained to the highest standards.
- Clean and prepare mechanical/electrical components for inspection using equipment such as sandblasters, cabinet blasters, dip tanks, steam wash pits, bake ovens, etc.
- Examine parts for defects (eccentricities, rubs, wear, excessive damage) to determine necessary repairs or replacements.
- Perform detailed mechanical and visual component inspections, documenting all relevant ‘As-Found’ data (register fits, internal bores, outer diameters, etc.) for accurate record-keeping.
- Recommend disposition on company job cards and customer spec sheets based on inspection findings.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns to resolve issues in-shop promptly.
- Safely oversee lifting/rigging of equipment, including items weighing up to 10 tons, ensuring safety protocols are always followed.
- This position reports directly to the shop foreman/assistant foreman and has no supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a Submersible Pump Technician with expertise in motor-driven pumps.
- Strong background in electrical rotating equipment and troubleshooting.
- Ability to disassemble and reassemble complex mechanical and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with standard shop equipment for cleaning and preparing parts for inspection.
- Ability to inspect components and identify issues like wear, rubs, and damage, documenting findings in detail.
- Ability to make sound recommendations on repairs and replacements based on inspection results.
- Ability to perform work efficiently under pressure.
- Experience with lifting and rigging equipment safely, particularly heavy equipment up to 10 tons.
- Strong attention to detail, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to maintain flexibility with a schedule, including extended hours, nights, and weekends (Overtime required).
- Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty pounds.
Additional Skills and Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or certification from an applicable trade/technical school, plus 5 years of experience in the rotating machinery industry. Candidates with 10 years of hands-on experience may be considered in lieu of trade school certification.
- Extensive 3-phase electrical knowledge and familiarity with standard electrical testing equipment, including megohmmeters, multimeters, ammeters, winding resistance meters, Low/High Voltage Test Panels, etc. (Training will be provided for electrical parameters if necessary).
- Proficient in using mechanical measuring equipment, including Inside/Outside Micrometers, vernier calipers, depth gauges, and steel rulers, common in a machine shop environment.
- Ability to accurately read, understand, and interpret pump-specific technical manuals, component drawings, and sketches. Ability to follow industry standards, customer specifications, and company policies/procedures.
