Job Summary :
The Electrical Services Design Engineer reports to the Director of Planning, Engineering & Architecture. This position’s primary responsibility is to coordinate campus-wide electrical system distribution testing, and maintenance and operations, support services and projects, a variety of small and large renovation projects, as well as new construction projects. The ESE is knowledgeable and experienced in the conduct of electrical tests on power distribution and utilization equipment. Experience shall include the safe inspection, evaluation and testing of existing and newly-installed switchgear, circuit breakers (air, vacuum, oil, and SF6 gas types), electrical bus networks, cables, protective relaying, metering, power transformers, instrument transformers, motors, surge arresters, capacitors, motors, generators, transfer switches, batteries, and control systems, with reference to applicable standards such as the International Electrical Testing Association ANSI / NETA Acceptance and Maintenance standards, NFPA 70B and other industry accepted standards and practices.
The ESDE works collaboratively with the Facilities Operations, Planning, Design and Construction, Senior Mechanical Engineer, the Campus Inspector, campus electrical personnel, campus instrumentation personnel, campus fire alarm shop personnel and central plant personnel, Environment, Health, and Safety, Academic Divisions, project management and architectural / engineering support staff of Planning, Design & Construction.
Position Description :
- Make recommendations for and oversees the testing and maintenance of electrical power equipment by campus personnel and contracted service providers.
- Manages electrical maintenance and corrective projects with crews but can work independently.
- Individual may coordinate investigations, tests, and evaluations, and prepares written reports as needed.
- Review new construction and renovation projects for proper installation of electrical equipment for Planning, Design & Construction.
- Insure installations and designs are compliant to electrical code, OSHA regulations and Caltech Design Guidelines for all maintenance repairs, renovation and new construction projects.
- Work with a qualified electrical engineering firm to perform shock and arc flash risk assessments and short circuity fault / device coordination studies are performed, along with coordinating the installation and maintaining the accuracy of the arc flash hazard warning labels.
- Evaluate faulty equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test equipment or software.
- Coordinate testing required to identify, locate, and correct electrical circuit abnormalities
- Identify the types, classification, and application of transformers and electrical circuits used as temporary or emergency power sources.
- Understand the differences between dry-type, cast-coil, and liquid-filled transformers
- Understand the application of power substation, distribution, instrument, and control transformers
- Reviews tests and inspects insulation on electrical equipment
- Coordinates work by others doing insulation testing, on conductors, oil filled transformers, and other electrical devices
- Monitor in the installation, maintenance and renewal of cable, bus bar, overhead conductors, riser, jumpers, insulators, supports and bushings
- Develop an Electrical Safety Program and coordinate field audit of this program
- Provide electrical design services to the Design & Construction Team as needed per California Electrical Code
- Design electrical schematics, interconnection diagrams, power distribution, control panels and other electrical drawings
- Generate detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and complete system-level electrical Bill of Materials, as required
- Conduct building system assessments and inspections to evaluate conditions, operations, and maintenance requirements of building electrical systems
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to operations and maintenance personnel for issues on electrical systems. Support faculty, consultants and field electricians, as required
