Element Solutions is seeking a highly motivated, career-oriented candidate to join our team in Bellingham, Washington. Element is a well-established geological and environmental consulting firm that specializes in geotechnical evaluations, geologic hazard reviews, stormwater feasibility studies, and environmental site assessments for residential and commercial developments across the northern Puget Sound region. As a staff geologist / environmental scientist, you will play a key role in planning and executing field operations while also being responsible for preparing exhibits and maps, analyzing data, and writing reports for a variety of geotechnical and geologic-hazard related projects and environmental assessments. The ideal candidate will have a strong combination of field, analytical, and communications skills that will allow them to excel in various field and office responsibilities associated with project tasks and report production. We are seeking a new team member who is dedicated to practicing and refining their skills while advancing their career as an earth and environmental science professional. This position is open to entry-level applicants with a strong educational background in the geosciences. Related job experience is preferred but not required for consideration.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Work within a small team to plan, explore, and analyze site surface and subsurface conditions
· Geotechnical exploration documentation and soil sampling
· Geological reconnaissance and field mapping
· Draft geotechnical and geologic hazard reports with supporting logs and exhibits
· Data analysis / interpretation for various applications (seismic, infiltration, slope stability, etc.)
· Conduct Environmental Site Assessments (Phase 1 and 2 ESAs)
· Environmental soil and groundwater sampling, seasonal groundwater monitoring
· Construction phase observation / documentation / consultation
· Assist with business development (proposals, SOQs, outreach, etc.)
· Work under direction and mentorship of licensed professionals (PE, LEG, LG)
· Gain experience and skillset towards becoming a Project Geologist / Scientist and Licensure
Desired Qualifications
· BS/BA degree in Geology, Environmental Science, or related field. MS degree is preferable.
· 0 – 3 years of experience in geotechnical/geological and/or environmental science positions.
· Geologist-In-Training (GIT) certification (or obtainable within 6 months)
· Intent to pursue LG in Washington State upon meeting experience requirements
· Knowledge of soil and rock classification systems and understanding of geologic mapping
· Capacity to direct and document explorations (borings, test pits, penetrometer tests, etc.)
· Experience with geomorphic image and field interpretation, field mapping techniques
· Experience using ESRI ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcMap products is preferable
· Ability to work in a professional, collaborative, and project-oriented team atmosphere
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing / discussion
· Enthusiasm to learn new skills and develop professionally in a career setting
· Capacity for field work in sloping / rugged / remote site areas and various weather conditions
· Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry sample buckets / field equipment over variable terrain
· Perform field work on foot / standing for prolonged timeframes (up to 8 hours in a day)
· Drive up to 4 hours in a day. Rare overnight travel possible.
· Valid driver’s license and good driving record
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation for this position assumes a 40-hour work week and non-exempt employment status (hourly-based pay), with overtime eligibility depending on work load. Our best estimate for pay rate of this position and experience range is $30-$36 per hour ($62,000 - $75,000 per year, assuming full-time hours). Compensation offered will depend on past educational and employment experience. Additional compensation may be considered for licensure, certifications, or experience level exceeding the listed qualifications (job responsibility adjusted accordingly).
