JOB DESCRIPTION
The Environmental Health and Safety Site Leader will provide support and technical expertise for the implementation, establishment, and sustainability of the site’s health and safety (H&S) systems and programs for the (EUA) facility in CT. This is a union facility, and successful candidates will work collaboratively with the union and management to drive effective H&S culture and compliance, to ensure consistency with procedures and processes as applicable and compliance with all regulations and corporate standards. Responsible for formulating a proactive, local H&S strategy that drives an environmentally sustainable, healthy, and operationally safe facility. This is a hands-on position which will be based in our Hartford, CT location.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Develop and implement programs and effective communications to drive the right behaviors and best practices to continuously improve the overall culture as related to H&S.
- Provide support and guidance to production and maintenance personnel on occupational health and safety issues.
- Act as the primary contact for dealing with all local, state, and federal agencies such as OSHA and CT DEEP.
- Monitor the site on a regular basis to evaluate compliance with all local, state, and federal H&S regulations, and play a key role in the ownership of compliance-related activities.
- Work collaboratively with operations and maintenance management to implement site-specific programs, policies, and procedures as well as the development and deployment of required training programs in line with Corporate Standards.
- Work collaboratively with leadership to calculate H&S leading and lagging indicator metrics and associated reporting.
- Provide subject matter expertise to support all recordkeeping as required by law.
- Work collaboratively with operations and maintenance management to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control occupational health hazards, i.e. industrial hygiene-related issues and concerns.
- Provide leadership and support for incident investigations to ensure they are properly classified and fully investigated to identify root causes and drive the implementation of corrective actions.
- Assist in the safety evaluation of new projects, equipment, and ventures; evaluate and recommend actions to improve safety performance and to reduce risk. Participate in any process safety reviews conducted on site operations.
- Provide leadership and support for the emergency response team and all emergency response team activities.
- Provide leadership and support for site safety committee activities, which includes regular and periodic meetings.
- Develop and deploy H&S training as needed, for both compliance and continuous improvement.
- Work collaboratively with local management and corporate health and safety to develop and execute annual H&S strategies, events, and other activities.
COMPETENCIES
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental or Safety Engineering, or closely related degree required.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience leading H&S in an industrial setting.
- Minimum of 3 years training and management experience (plant or department management).
- Required, previous experience in a Union Shop environment.
- Prior experience in leading and/or conducting internal investigations including root-cause analysis, SIF, and PSIF investigations.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing environmental health and safety programs and effective training curriculum.
- Proficient in all aspects of occupational health and safety and industrial hygiene.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with proven ability to interact with all levels of the organization, including the plant floor, as well as customers and outside professionals.
- Demonstrated project management and ability to deliver effective EH&S-related training.
- Strong verbal, written, presentation, and English language communication skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local occupational environmental, health, and safety laws and regulations as they apply to industrial organizations.
- Bi-lingual (English and Spanish) not required, but preferred.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
- None.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This is a hands-on position and will work both in an office and factory setting.
- Factory requires use of PPE (Safety Glasses/Safety Boots/earplugs/gloves) and environmental conditions vary.
- This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration as it is necessary to walk the shop floor.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
- This is a full-time, exempt-level position, and hours of work and days are Monday through Friday, during normal business hours.
- Hours of work may vary based on business needs.
- The facility is staffed on a 24/7 basis and the employee is expected to interact with all shifts regularly.
TRAVEL
- Infrequent, however, the employee may need to travel occasionally to other facilities (both domestic and international) for meetings, plant tours, project reviews, etc.
