POSITION SUMMARY :
This is a safety sensitive position which assists in the layout and design of all fabricated items needed by the District. Troubleshoot and assist in any welding application for the installation, repairing, and rebuilding of canal gates, framework, and hardware, as well as fleet and heavy equipment in need of specialized welding requirements. Responsible to Fabrication Foreman for related job functions of that area that relate to welding applications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Assist in layout and design of all fabricated items needed by the District. Assist with all larger welding jobs to minimize loss of time in conjunction with Fabrication Foreman and Maintenance Project Director.
- Coordinate all equipment welding repairs with Fabrication Foreman to ensure that equipment is not "down" for extended periods of time.
- Assists Fabrication Foreman when needed for fleet or heavy equipment welding requirements.
- Assists in troubleshooting all canal and lateral turnouts, bay checks, and hardware on system; replace, fit and install parts as necessary. Inspects and tests for leaks, set and adjust controls and check operation after repair.
- Responsible for welding shop and shop related equipment. In coordination with Fabrication Foreman, maintain adequate inventory supply of parts, welding supplies and tools to perform all shop and field related job functions.
- Responsible for assigned welding truck when working in the field.
- Maintain and log all work orders, complete and incomplete. Furnish Fabrication Foreman with progress report on all work orders assigned daily.
- Develop proficiency in the use of welding equipment and tools.
- Assists Fabrication Foreman in projects based on blueprints and plans, designed by Engineering department or another agency.
- Maintains a clean and safe work area, including the shop area.
- Responsible for compliance of safety rules and regulations.
- Responsible for knowing and abiding by all department and District policies and procedures.
- Attendance during scheduled shift.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES :
Knowledge of general agricultural equipment, welding abilities; knowledge of machines and tools, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance; perform preventative maintenance on equipment; ability to rig and strap fabricated equipment properly and safely; ability to paint and sandblast when required; follow oral and written instructions; read gauges on equipment and operate hand tools; operate a motor vehicle; must have the ability to communicate in English verbally and in writing; basic arithmetic; general office equipment and computer literacy a plus; ability to change when priorities shift based on project needs; must be self-motivated individual who can exercise independent judgment; maintain accurate records; demonstrate attention to detail; understand and follow broad or complex instructions; use initiative and independent judgment while recognizing when to refer matters to the attention of Management; maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with others.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
The employee must be able to move about the work environment; must be able to work in a fast paced, changing environment; must be able to walk up to 2 miles per day on uneven slopes and ground; will be required to drive throughout the District; must have the ability to frequently move or re-position up to 50 pounds of materials or objects. Essential duties are performed outdoors and in warehouse; must be able to work in differing lighting and at night; work surface is uneven and exposed to the elements; weather, temperature, and local wildlife are conditions of the working environment; irregular or extended work hours; occasionally required to change working hours or work overtime, nights, holidays, and weekends.
Position functions both within a shop and outdoor environment with frequent exposure to all types of weather conditions, fumes, dust, and odors. Constant and more extreme hazards and atmospheric conditions are mechanical, explosives, electrical, radiant energy, mists, gases, dust, and areas of reduced ventilation. Position faces the potential of serious burns; use of safety shoes, glasses, steel-toed shoes, and leather wearing apparel is required.

Requirements :
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have at least two (2) years’ hands on welding and basic mechanical experience. Knowledge of agricultural equipment is preferred.
Education / Experience substitution : A combination of education, training and experience may be applied.
Licenses / Certifications : Current driver’s license and be insurable; welding certification a plus.
Other : Must pass post-offer, pre-employment drug screen, medical exam, and motor vehicle report in compliance with District insurance guidelines.
