Job Description:
We are seeking to hire a FULL TIME lead instructor to develop and lead our growing outdoor programs. Having effective instructors is an essential ingredient to the success of our programs, as the instructor is responsible for creating a structured and seamless experience for our youth. Our outings focus primarily on developing social & emotional learning, teamwork and leadership skills. Through this framework, instructors will have the opportunity to design, implement, evaluate, and improve lesson plans throughout the year.
In addition we offer regularly scheduled outings, including (but not limited to) hiking, sailing, fishing, and skiing trips. Instructors will be responsible for leading these larger trips, in collaboration with our partner organizations.
You will be working directly with our current lead instructor to ensure a smooth transition.
Responsibilities:
● Plan & lead outdoor trips for underserved youth in the Greater Boston Area.
● Collaborate with community partners to provide enrichment sessions in local parks & green spaces.
● Maintain regular communication with Elevate Youth staff & partners. Attend weekly virtual meetings.
● Take attendance, write post-trip reports, data evaluation collection and create new lesson plans.
● Recruiting, training and managing co-instructors, including volunteers
● Responsible for risk management/COVID safety standards, and enforce social distancing and mask wearing if necessary.
● Prepare and organize necessary program equipment and supplies for programs
● Assume a leading role in promoting health & wellness on each outing, through discussions around physical and mental health, offering healthy snack options, and promoting our initiative. Take part in pertinent EAT initiative discussions
● Participate in all training and Professional Development opportunities
● Oversee the development of a culturally relevant curriculum and ensure that all program delivery uses culturally and logistically sustaining practices
● “Notes from the field” - create 2 blog posts per month
● Serve as a positive adult role for the youth we serve.
● Create a safe space, both physically and emotionally
Further Responsibilities
- Social media - Curate and create consistent content on all social channels (Insta, FB) at least 2 x/week
- Volunteer Coordination - pre-trip info, focus on inclusion during outing, post trip thank you email
- Newsletter - 1x month - get familiar with Mailchimp
- Attendance - input into salesforce and add any youth and/or group observations
- Working with Program Director on various remote working tasks
Qualifications:
● Proven success working with urban youth and diverse communities
● A curiosity about nature and an ability to instill the “awe factor” in the youth you serve through engaging programs.
● Strong organizational and multitasking skills
● Knowledgeable in the areas of outdoor recreation, wilderness safety, and our natural world is preferable.
● Strong leadership skills and an ability to work collaboratively with EY staff and partners.
● Dependable and flexible: an ability to work within constraints of the after-school schedule and adjust to a fluid working environment.
● A continuous learner who is energetic, has a self-starter attitude, and is comfortable problem solving in an environment characterized by its fast pace
● CPR certified, or a willingness to obtain a certification
● Ability to provide your own transportation
● Ability to work outdoors in potentially inclement weather for extended periods of time.
● Ability to represent Elevate Youth in a professional manner.
Additional Details
● Salary: $38,000-$42,000 (based on experience), Employer sponsored health insurance, paid time off including, vacation, holidays, personal days, parental and sick leave. Workers comp included.
