Job Title: Senior Trial Court Staff Attorney - Office of the General Counsel (State Funded)


Salary: $78,138.18 Annually


Salary is non-negotiable. The successful candidate will be hired at the minimum salary. NEW SALARY: $78,138.18 (annual salary of $74,549.22 plus Competitive Area Differential pay of $299.08 per month).

The function of a Senior Trial Court Staff Attorney is to provide legal advice to judges, magistrates, and court personnel. Primarily, the Senior Trial Court Staff Attorney conducts legal research and prepares legal memoranda, draft opinions, orders and reports. The individual in this position will advise county and circuit court judges how to rule on a variety of issues arising from various pre-trial, trial, and post-trial motions, such as motions to dismiss, etc. There may be some probate/guardianship, family, criminal or civil issues as well. The work performed by the Senior Trial Court Staff Attorney involves considerable interpretation and judgment in the analysis of legal issues in all areas of the law or any matters arising under the jurisdiction of the county or circuit court. Working contacts are established with judges and other trial court personnel.


Work will be performed in-person/on site at a courthouse location. This position is eligible for a hybrid remote work/onsite schedule after a 90-day period, as outlined by existing Circuit policies and procedures.


Responsibilities


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts legal research of substantive and procedural matters, and prepares legal documents, such as memoranda, opinions, judgments, and orders.
  • Reviews files, evidence, depositions, pleadings, motions, legal briefs, memoranda of law, proposed orders, and other related documentation in order to advise judges in a variety of legal areas.
  • Attends staff meetings to exchange information; attends technical or professional workshops, seminars or conferences to improve professional skills; and attends hearings as required.
  • Drafts orders, reviews briefs, conducts legislative research, and tracks legislation applicable to the court.
  • Assists the Court’s General Counsel or Court Administrator by reviewing contracts, or drafting administrative memoranda and orders to promote the efficient administration of justice. Some litigation experience preferred, as attendance at court hearings may be required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Qualifications


  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Member in good standing with the Florida Bar.
  • Five (5) years of experience in the practice of law or as a law clerk in an appellate or trial court.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):


  • Knowledge of legal principles, statutory and case law, court rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use word processing software such as Word; must have sufficient typing ability to produce memos, orders, etc.
  • Ability to conduct legal research including a comprehensive knowledge of and ability to use legal publications and on-line services, such as Westlaw and/or Lexis.
  • Ability to reason logically and analytically.
  • Ability to grasp, comprehend, and analyze complex legal issues and complicated factual details.
  • Ability to perform exacting work.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and concepts effectively and succinctly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, impartiality and honesty in handling matters before the court.
  • Ability to work effectively with others and/or to work independently.

  • Moderate noise; business office setting.


Physical Demands:

  • Work involves a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, talking, listening, and reaching with hands and arms. Must be able to transfer up to 10 lbs.
