About The Lilly Medicine Foundry

Lilly recently announced a$4.5 billion investment to create the Lilly Medicine Foundry, a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. The first-ever facility of its kind, combining research and manufacturing in a single location, the Medicine Foundry will allow Lilly to further develop innovative solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase capacity for clinical trial medicines, while also reducing costs and environmental impact.

  • NOTE: final location for this role will be Lebanon, IN site but flexibility to work from Indianapolis will be required throughout 2025 and 2026.


Organization And Position Overview

The Sr. Director Digital Innovation is responsible for creating the strategy and then implementing the digital plant systems and capabilities for the Lilly Medicine Foundry. This role will define the digital plant business needs and user requirements, ensuring that the end user requirements are well understood and incorporated into the design, and that the applications and systems used are appropriately configured and integrated to fulfill the business need. The Sr. Director Digital Innovation will combine the knowledge of pharmaceutical operations with digital technology to deliver a digital plant solution to the Foundry operations. A significant part of the role involves working with local and global IT experts and system owners to understand digital system capabilities and system positioning, as well as close collaboration with Operations, QC, Engineering and QA to understand interdependencies between business processes and digital applications. 

This role will report to the Foundry Site Head and is a member of the Foundry Site Lead Team (FLT). The FLT has collective responsibility to develop and implement the strategic direction, organizational capability and management of the site. Primarily, the members of the team drive the site toward achieving long term business objectives; they continuously develop the business and the organization for the future bearing in mind corporate and LRL objectives and the continuously changing external environment; and they manage issues that span multiple teams in the organization and extend into the broader corporate and external context.

In the Project Delivery Phase and Startup Phase of the project (2025 To 2028), the FLT roles will be fluid and dynamic as we endeavor to support the project delivery, build a new organization, develop and implement the necessary systems and business processes required to support GMP operations and build the site culture. This will require significant collaboration, creativity and resilience as the Lilly Medicines Foundry goes from design, to start-up, and to steady-state operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translate the business needs into user requirements for all new digital technologies & solutions across the Foundry that will deliver an automated, paperless, fully integrated, data analytics driven operations and business processes.  
  • Develop the standard workflows for how we will use digital technology within our business processes and operations. 
  • Define strategies for operational offline and online shakedown and testing of digital solutions post-implementation by IT and Automation. Work with the relevant functions to develop test scope and ensure it is planned and executed appropriately.  
  • Liaise with various business functions and IT to develop best training practices to ensure an efficient, effective, and timely knowledge transfer to the end users.  
  • Support the change management, OCM and implementation of digital solutions at the site.  
  • Develop the Digital Innovation Roadmap for the Foundry in partnership with IT and Automation.
  • Progress the digital roadmap at the Foundry site, as a key member of the Digital Plant team, by embedding digital solutions into business processes. 


Basic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business Information Systems, Computer Science, or related discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in operations, preferred in pharmaceutical or other regulated industries.

  • Must have a strong ability to form effective relationships at all levels. This candidate must be able to work closely with the Site Leadership team to ensure alignment with corporate objectives and internal decision-making processes and be able to connect and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization on site.  
  • Should have experience developing and managing talented, engaged and high performing teams with a focus on building strong team cultures to ensure a safe environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to be decisive and make well-informed decisions for the benefit of the team.  Demonstrated ability to collate required information and ask the appropriate questions of peers to get to the best solution. 
  • Effective communication skills with the experience and maturity to interact with all levels of the broader organization
  • Excellent interpersonal and teambuilding skills - able to develop effective teamwork between team members with diverse interpersonal styles; able to deliver effective coaching and feedback and develop team members.
  • Excellent self-management and organizational skills; able to manage multiple priorities, set personal and team priorities, and adjust as needed (ability to quickly adapt to changing situation, learn while doing, and deliver results)
  • Excellent at influencing team members and internal/external stakeholders without direct positional authority and effective at negotiating agreements both internally and externally to the team.

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is

$151,500 - $222,200

Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
