SUMMARY
A Laboratory Specimen Collector is responsible for proper identification, collection, and shipping of patient specimens, in addition to overseeing communication with the testing laboratory and resolving any errors or inquiries that may arise. By performing these duties, the Laboratory Specimen Collector provides much needed support to the staff at a clinic/facility as they go through their daily routines.
High-level attention to detail, written communication skills, and verbal communication skills are necessary for success in this position. Individuals with experience in the laboratory/medical field, with a positive professional attitude, and with a strong, caring instinct will find themselves right at home in this role.
HOURS & LOCATIONS
This position requires an individual to work Part Time, Monday to Friday.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Efficiently and safely perform collection, processing, and shipment of specimens for the purpose of laboratory testing as directed by clinic/facility staff.
- Follow standard policies to correctly identify the patient before any specimen is obtained.
- Demonstrate outstanding customer service skills and compassionate communication when interacting with patients, physicians, and clinic/facility staff.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate with, understand, and react effectively to a diverse patient population base.
- Complete paper or electronic test requisition forms, including patient demographics, testing information, medication details, and billing/insurance information.
- Prepare specimens with proper labeling and requisition forms prior to shipping, packaging the specimens into appropriate FedEx containers.
- Support the clinic/facility staff with the export of patient reports generated by the laboratory and the upload of patient reports to the practice management system.
- Coordinate with courier services/laboratory staff for pick-up of specimens; may drop-off specimens at FedEx, when applicable/asked.
- Order supplies (requisition forms, shipping materials, collection materials) from the laboratory portal and maintain inventory at the clinic/facility to ensure sufficient collection supplies are available for standard testing volumes.
- Assist laboratory staff in resolving specimen issues with missing/incomplete billing or patient information, either via the laboratory portal or via email, when required.
- Strictly adhere to HIPAA guidelines.
- Inform clinic/facility supervisory staff of any problems or circumstances that may cause deviations from established procedures.
- Maintain a neat, clean, and orderly work environment.
- Perform other clinic/facility support tasks or duties as assigned by supervisory staff.
