Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Legal Assistant to join our dynamic criminal defense law firm. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of legal terminology and procedures, with experience or interest in criminal law. This role requires excellent organizational skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, and proficiency in administrative support and case management. As a Legal Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our attorneys and ensuring the efficient operation of our office.
Responsibilities
- Assist attorneys with case preparation, including organizing and maintaining case files and trial materials.
- Transcribe and draft legal documents, correspondence, and client meeting notes with accuracy.
- Conduct preliminary legal research and gather case-related information under attorney supervision.
- Manage case files, including filing, indexing, and updating records to ensure compliance with deadlines.
- Draft and proofread routine correspondence and legal documents.
- Schedule and coordinate court appearances, attorney-client meetings, and appointments with court clerks and interpreters.
- Communicate effectively with clients, court personnel, witnesses, and other parties involved in cases.
- Maintain a detailed office calendar to track court dates, filing deadlines, and appointments.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information in compliance with legal standards.
Requirements
- Previous experience as a Legal Assistant, preferably in criminal defense or a similar legal setting.
- Familiarity with criminal law terminology, procedures, and court systems is a strong plus.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency in legal administrative tasks and document management systems.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Professional demeanor when interacting with clients, attorneys, and court personnel.
- Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) are highly desirable but not required.
