Job Description

Key Responsibilities of Hospital Security Officers

  • Access Control & Surveillance
    • Monitor and control access to hospital premises, ensuring only authorized individuals enter restricted areas.
    • Operate and monitor security cameras, alarm systems, and other surveillance equipment.
    • Conduct regular security patrols to detect and prevent security threats.
  • Emergency Response & Crisis Management
    • Respond promptly to emergency situations such as medical emergencies, fires, or security breaches.
    • Assist in the evacuation of patients, visitors, and staff during emergencies.
    • Coordinate with local law enforcement and emergency responders when necessary.
  • Safety & Threat Prevention
    • Prevent unauthorized access, theft, vandalism, and other criminal activities.
    • De-escalate conflicts and handle disturbances professionally.
    • Enforce hospital policies, safety regulations, and visitor guidelines.
  • Patient, Staff & Visitor Protection
    • Ensure the safety and well-being of patients, hospital staff, and visitors.
    • Escort staff, patients, and visitors when required, especially in high-risk situations.
    • Assist with patient transport and restrain aggressive individuals if necessary (in compliance with legal and ethical standards).
  • Incident Reporting & Documentation
    • Maintain detailed records of security incidents, accidents, and suspicious activities.
    • Complete and submit reports on security-related matters.
    • Provide testimony or evidence in legal or disciplinary proceedings if needed.
  • Collaboration & Communication
    • Work closely with hospital administration, medical personnel, and law enforcement agencies.
    • Participate in security training and emergency preparedness drills.
    • Provide customer service by assisting visitors and guiding them as needed.
Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. College education preferred
  • Must be of 21 years of age at least
  • Must exhibit exceptional customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Must be able to attain a valid Guard License for Maryland or have applied and subsequently been issued such a license prior to employment.
  • As a condition of employment, employee must successfully complete a background investigation and a post-offer/pre-employment drug/alcohol test. Additionally, as a condition of continued employment, employee must maintain current active status of Guard License at all times, and must carry the license at all times while on duty
  • Have an employment history demonstrating reliability and dependability
  • Be able to handle emergency situations effectively while remaining calm
  • Display a professional demeanor at all times
  • Possess excellent customer service skills
  • Be able to work independently while also being a team player

  • Stand or walk constantly (for up to an entire shift) on various surfaces (tile, concrete, carpet)
  • Climb stairs, ramps, or ladders occasionally during shift
  • Occasionally bend/twist at waist/knees/neck to perform various duties
  • Occasionally lift or carry up to 40 pounds
  • Run as needed
  • Constant use of both hands and arms in reaching/handling/grasping/fingering while using phone, notepad, writing reports, and other administrative tasks
  • Constant use of eyes (correctable vision to normal level required) to observe, read, interact with public and co-workers, view security monitors; includes hand/eye coordination
  • Read, understand and clearly speak English; constantly use speech and hearing (correctable to normal level required) in communicating with public/co-workers, giving and receiving instructions, using phones
  • Work in various environments including adverse outdoor conditions such as cold (snow), rain or heat;
  • Constant mental alertness and attention to detail required while setting priorities and following up on assignments
  • Must possess effective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with ability to deal with all levels of personnel and the general public in a professional and effective manner; must be able to use initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines
  • Must be able to frequently prepare written reports and logs in neat, legible handwriting; may require computer skills
  • Must be able to read and understand all operating procedures and instructions
  • Must be able to handle pressure of working with high volume general public (constantly to occasionally depending on assignment.
