Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The role of the Aviation Maintenance team within the Department of Aviation and Emergency Management at Elizabeth City State University ( ECSU ) is to provide airworthy and safe training aircraft for use in the university’s FAA Part 141 flight training programs.
Description of Work
The role of the Aviation Maintenance team within the Department of Aviation and Emergency Management at Elizabeth City State University ( ECSU ) is to provide airworthy and safe training aircraft for use in the university’s FAA Part 141 flight training programs.
The role will be responsible for assisting the Director with supervision and guidance to staff with routine and preventative maintenance checks, diagnosing system failures, and advising on the appropriate repair process and complete documentation of all maintenance events to include work orders, parts inventory and management of personnel.
Position may require instances of performance of maintenance in tight and / or unusual aircraft locations. Instances of travel may be required for training and to remote aircraft locations for off-site repairs.
Competencies / Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Knowledge and Skill – Understanding of functioning of various types of aircraft assigned. Knowledge of aviation rules during various weather conditions using IFR and VFR . Knowledge and skill in takeoff and landing procedures. Knowledge and skill in operation of all equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s limitations and federal aviation guidelines. Knowledge of geography and flight-planning responsibilities. Skill in monitoring engine operation, fuel consumption, and functioning of aircraft systems during flights. Ability to apply knowledge to the development and oversight of safety programs for pilots, mechanics, and other applicable employees.
Business Management : Knowledge of appropriate business practices and procedures. Ability to manage and improve business processes and operations by ensuring continuity and integration of policies and procedures with the organization’s mission and strategic plan. Ability to utilize financial, material, and human resources to achieve goals.
Communication : Ability to communicate with passengers, ground crews, air traffic controllers, pilots, and others in a professional manner as needed for safe flight operations. Ability to effectively represent the program and the agency / University on aviation matters.

Additional Requirements :
Technical : Thorough technical knowledge of aircraft systems. Ability to independently perform full scope of repair, inspections, modifications, and maintenance. May require the ability to develop and fabricate special tools for unusual work projects. Ability to serve as lead, resource, or supervisor to others.
Regulatory Standards : Ability to understand and follow required protocols in assigned fields of aircraft operations and ability to interpret protocols in unusual circumstances. May require the ability to act as a lead in training or overseeing other workers in following protocol.
