Job Summary
Delivers quality patient care while performing diagnostic and screening breast ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. Must have the ability to independently operate ultrasound equipment and assist physicians in the diagnosis process. Works as a team in the sonography department to ensure efficient patient care.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Explains procedures to patient, once inside the ultrasound room, to inform them, reduce anxiety, and obtain consent and cooperation for exam.
- Performs routine screening and diagnostic breast ultrasound examinations following the desired protocol to identify and record appropriate anatomical, pathological, and diagnostic information and images.
- Correlates mammographic and MRI information with ultrasound examinations.
- Uses independent judgment during the ultrasound exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathological findings.
- If necessary, perform other diagnostic procedures with a physician (FNAC, cyst aspirations, and ultrasound core biopsy).
- If necessary, controls the ultrasound machine while the physician performs the ultrasound exam on the patient.
- Delivers the patients results while explaining the necessary follow-up needed.
- Completes medical billing forms.
- Training of other staff members in regard to the ultrasound machine, procedures and protocols as needed and upon request of department manager.
- The primary shift is Flexible 8:00am-4:30pm at our main office location in Brighton but may be asked to work at satellite offices pending staffing needs.
- Works independently and can make appropriate workflow decisions.
- Able to lift 50lbs and care for non-ambulatory patients.
Qualification and Skills
- Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program with appropriate clinical experience.
- Must be registry eligible upon graduation but certification by the ARDMS in the appropriate specialty areas will be required once employed, within 6 months of hire date.
- Can complete the training process within 6 months and thus be able to work independently, meeting workflow expectations.
- Remain current and up to date with continuing education (30 CME's/ 3 years) and be active members of the ARDMS organization.
- Basic computer knowledge necessary; familiarity with EHR and PACS systems beneficial
- Ability to maintain great customer service skills in a high-volume facility
Performance Standards
Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as adopt a teamwork mindset within the sonography department. Sonographers reports directly to Ultrasound Department Manager.
