SUMMARY
The Branch Supervisor & YPS Associate manages the day-to-day operations of an Elkhart Public Library branch location, the staff and the buildings. This position also organizes and carries out YPS programming and related duties for the Branch Library.
Spanish language proficiency preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Organization-Wide EXPECTATIONS
- Follows and enforces established Library and personnel policy, procedures and work standards
- Attends work regularly, on time, and as scheduled
- Exhibits welcoming, helpful, positive and friendly behavior to all patrons, staff and guests at all times in all communications formats (verbal and non-verbal)
- Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information
- Regularly monitors Library communication venues including but not limited to employee email, staff bulletin boards and the intranet
- Participates in meetings, conferences, continuing education, community engagement, and special projects as required by the Elkhart Public Library or as dictated by professional commitment
- Addresses, or assists in addressing, issues and concerns related to the safety of Library staff and users as well as the security and maintenance of Library buildings and equipment
Job-Specific ACCOUNTABILITY
- Supervises (see supervisor responsibilities below) and provides guidance to branch personnel
- Provides input on the overall branch library collection based on community interests
- Provides input to the Branch Operations Manager and participates in the recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, and terminating of branch personnel
- Plans, develops, promotes, implements and evaluates branch programs and services in coordination with the Branch Operations Manager
- Plans, prepares, promotes and participates in young peoples programming and presentations both in the Library and in the community in cooperation with the Branch Young Peoples Service Librarian
- Performs designated administrative and/or clerical duties per Branch Supervisor & YPS Associate Work Instructions
WORK CONDITIONS
- Full-time (including evenings and weekends)
- Frequent local travel, occasional long distance travel
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Associate degree from an accredited school plus ten (10) years (public preferred) library experience, OR
- Bachelors degree from an accredited school plus three (3) years (public preferred) library experience
- Minimum of an Associate degree in Early Childhood Development/Education or equivalent coursework from an accredited school required
- Experience working with pre-school or elementary school children in a public library or school is a plus
- Minimum of one (1) year (public preferred) library supervisory experience
- Must have valid drivers license with acceptable driving record per the established guidelines of the Librarys insurer
- If driving own car during paid work time, a certificate of coverage or insurability from personal auto insurer must be provided
- Spanish language proficiency preferred

- A thorough knowledge of modern library systems, materials, services, programs and collection classifications, along with standard office and library equipment and the ability to apply that knowledge
- Broad knowledge in general subject areas as well as knowledge of authors, books, readers interests, reading levels and other media
- Above-average computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software in a Windows environment, along with basic Internet research capabilities
- Basic mathematical skills
- Ability to recognize and define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to follow written and verbal instructions
- Dependable and able to quickly exercise sound judgment during emergencies
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to pass a drug and alcohol test as requested or required
LANGUAGE SKILLS
- Excellent written and oral language and communication skills
- Ability to read and comprehend written instructions and business correspondence, along with general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and/or governmental regulations
- Ability to effectively write reports and business correspondence
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from Library personnel and the general public in one-to-one and group situations

- Ability to occasionally reach with hands and arms
- Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, and crawl
- Ability to occasionally lift or move up to 40 pounds
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Directly supervises branch staff personnel
- Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Elkhart Public Librarys policies and applicable laws, including planning and assigning work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems
