About The Job
Responsible to microscopically examine preparations for cytologic evaluation, correlating clinical information with morphologic findings to make a final diagnosis on negative gynecologic slides and render a microscopic assessment on abnormal gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens pending final diagnosis by a pathologist.
What You’ll Do
Education/Training: All non-supervisory cytotechnologists must meet at least one of the following qualifications:
Graduated from an Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) accredited school of cytotechnology or other organization approved by Health and Human Services (HHS); or
Certified in cytotechnology by a certification agency approved by HHS (e.g. American Society of Clinical Pathology); or
Before September 1, 1992, have successfully completed two years in an accredited institution (12 semester hours in science, eight of which are in biology) and have 12 months training in an approved school of cytotechnology; or have received six months formal training in an approved school and six months full-time experience; or
Before September 1, 1992, have achieved a satisfactory grade in an HHS proficiency test for cytotechnologists or
Before September 1, 1994, have two years full-time experience or equivalent within the preceding five years examining slides under the supervision of a physician certified in pathology and before January 1, 1969, be a high school graduate with six months cytotechnology training in a laboratory directed by a physician and completed two years full time supervised experience in cytotechnology before 1/1/69; or
On or before September 1, 1994, have two years full-time experience or equivalent within preceding five years in the US and on or before September 1, 1995, have either graduated from a CAHEA-approved school or be certified as a cytotechnologist.
Experience: Minimum of three (3) years experience in an accredited laboratory as CT in the last two (2) years is preferred. Imager training is preferred.
Certification/Licensure: Cytotechnologist CT (ASCP) or CT (ASCP) cm, or an equivalent certification from another agency (e.g. HHS) required. ThinPrep certification required.
Software/Hardware: Knowledge of EPIC, Sunquest, and PowerPath systems are a plus.

What You’ll Do
- Examines the quality of cytology preparations and documents any adverse findings on appropriate quality control documents.
- Verifies accuracy and completeness of accessioning data and results entered into the LIS system for cytology specimens.
- Documents the total number of slides examined in any laboratory and the time spent in this examination and maintains work logs to reflect
- activities other than screening.
- Provides specimen adequacy during Fine Needle Aspiration procedures.
- Provides guidance to Cytopathology Technicians in cytopreparatory techniques.
- Assists with QA/QC duties as requested by the Lead Cytotechnologist.
