What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator (Solid Waste) position at Ellis County, Kansas?
40 hours per week on a two-week rotation schedule is as follows: Week #1: Monday-Thursday (8a-5p) Friday (8a-12p); Week #2: Tuesday-Thursday (8a-4p), Friday (8a-5p), and Saturday (9a-4p).
Job Purpose and Objectives:
Performs skilled work in operating multiple types of construction and maintenance equipment for Ellis County.
Essential Functions:
- Operates heavy equipment such as a motor grader, roller, blacktop machine, chip spreader, compactor, and other equipment
- Efficiently patches and rebuilds road and surfaces
- Digs, compacts, and covers trenches for disposal of refuse
- Performs finished grading operations
- Completes maintenance work such as mowing road ditches, installing and maintaining culverts and filling washouts
- Provides light maintenance and daily servicing of machinery, in connection with the operations of related equipment
- Hauls and spreads rock, asphalt, and sand
- Sorts waste for final disposal from Ellis County HHW and the other counties
- Loads, packs, and maintains proper hauling weights of trailers for transfer to off-site facilities
- Tarps/un-tarps empty and full trailers for rotation of trailers being utilized in the transfer station in varying weather conditions
- Disseminates and compacts construction and demolition debris in approved locations
- Monitors and safely controls permitted burning of tree branches, logs, and other foliage
- Ability to communicate with the public and educate on proper disposal methods
- Enforces and maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances
- Performs other duties as assigned or deemed necessary
- Complies with all organizational and departmental policies and procedures
- Operates all job-related equipment, machinery, tools, and other aids as required or needed
- Protects and maintains any confidential information, whether oral, written, or electronic
Position Requirements:
1. High school diploma or other equivalent
2. Heavy equipment operator experience preferred
Certifications / Licenses:
1. Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement
2. 24-Hour Household Hazardous Waste Certification required within six months of hire date
The successful applicant will also be required to participate in the FHWA (CDL) drug-testing program.

4. Ability to operate a motor grader, tractor and roller, loader, dozer, crane, backhoe, and
other heavy and light construction and road maintenance equipment
