What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mutuel Clerk position at Ellis Park Racing and Gaming?
Position Summary
A Mutuel Clerk is responsible for processing, cash handling, redeeming, verifying, and selling pari-mutuel tickets for various types of bets, assists guests with questions and ticket redemptions, and explains wager techniques to guests in a courteous and helpful manner.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Must be thoroughly knowledgeable of pari-mutuel wagering (e.g., reading tickets sold, tote keyboard, and basic racing terminology).
- Must be knowledgeable about all aspects of racing, including types of wagering, availability of simulcasting, and wagering offered at the various tracks.
- Maintain sales in an organized manner while ensuring efficient and accurate service while providing guests with instructions, taking bets, selling cash, refunding and canceling tickets, and/or other information.
- Provide customers with a list of scratches for tracks or results for races.
- Handles and secures all money banks to ensure the proper balancing and transaction verification through the sales system and prepares and verifies all closing paperwork.
- Fill out and sign the variance form if the money bank does not balance at the end of the shift, which must include the possible reason for every variance.
- Maintain strong knowledge of money handling, counting, and complex mathematical skills.
- Notifies higher level management of any complaints or suspicious or unusual activity in a timely manner.
- Maintains the confidentiality of winning tickets to ensure guest privacy and all company matters.
- Adhere to departmental procedures, safety rules, health regulations, and Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) rules and regulations.
- Build relationships and loyalty with guests through sincere and meaningful interactions (e.g., learn guests’ names and preferences; connect with them individually and professionally; smile; make eye contact and verbally greet guests from arrival to the property through departure; and provide fast and friendly service to guests).
- Be a team player (e.g., work toward team goals and foster a collaborative and positive work environment; put the team first; assist coworkers; treat all coworkers with kindness, courtesy, and respect; never engage in negativity; maintain openness to coaching, learning and improving; receptive to change and willingness to embrace challenges with team-spirit).
- Develop a thorough knowledge of services, room locations, amenities, and surroundings (e.g., Mutuels, gift shop, restaurants, Sky Theater, etc.), providing accurate directions and information for guest inquiries about promotions and special events.
- Always maintain a courteous, positive, and professional working relationship with all Ellis Entertainment personnel and the general public (e.g., coworkers, clients, and vendors).
- Work under pressure; maintain regular and punctual attendance, including working odd and unusual hours, weekends, and holidays.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as necessary or assigned.
Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED preferred.
- Relevant work experience or cashiering experience is preferred.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Must possess basic mathematical skills (able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide).
Licensing & Certification:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid license through the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC).
Computer Equipment, Software, Machinery:
- Ability to operate a tote wagering system and/or betting terminal
- Experience operating counting equipment (10-key calculator).
Essential Physical Requirements:
- The job requires the ability to talk, turn, twist, stand for long periods of time, and repetitively use hands 51-100% of the time.
- The job requires the ability to bend over and stoop 1-24% of the time.
- The job requires the ability to carry, lift and slide/transfer 1-20lbs. 1-24% of the time.
Essential Mental Demands:
- The job requires the ability to organize, read, and perform math skills 51-100% of the time.
Work Environment (inside/outside):
- The job is performed indoors/outdoors with exposure to fumes (e.g., cigarette smoke) and occasional exposure to hot/cold temperatures, loud noises, and confined areas.
Other Requirements:
- Must provide and maintain a valid driver’s license.
