Material Handler/Shipper

Ellwood Specialty Metals Company (formerly known as Ellwood Specialty Steel) is the leading distributor and a fully-integrated producer of tool steels for plastic molds, die-cast and forging dies and other tooling applications. Our steel and aluminum are used to make countless parts for automobiles, aircraft, and consumer products.

As part of our evolving needs and in response to rapid growth, we currently have an opening for a Shipping/ Receiving Material Handler.

This non-exempt position is located at Ellwood Specialty Metals (ESM USA) in New Castle, PA and will report to the Manager of Shipping and Receiving.

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, this position will report directly to the ESM USA Manager of Shipping and Receiving. The Shipping/Receiving Material Handler performs daily and other related duties to shipping and receiving material. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Bands material to pallets based on size and weight, using plastic, and metal banding. Using cardboard and wood as spacers between the steel and aluminum blocks. 
• Communicates with Logistics Coordinator using BOL’s for LTL shipments, comparing BOL’s and cut pieces to verify all orders are complete.
• Stages loading areas with appropriate equipment, materials and space.
• Receives both incoming ground and truck shipment items and records delivery-related information. Compares information on packing slips with purchase order to verify accuracy of shipment.  Inspects incoming shipments identifying and recording damaged items.
• Operates fork truck to move material from receiving areas and to shipping staging areas. Assists truck drivers in loading or unloading material.
• Notifies supervisor of major discrepancies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

• Dock/Warehouse/Shop environment with a combination of both indoor and outdoor climate, depending on scheduled shipping/receiving activities. Varied exposure to environmental conditions related to outdoors, including changes in temperature and humidity.  Frequently exposed to fumes, odors, dust and dirt.
• While primarily standing or walking, performs medium to heavy work, exerting up to 50 lbs. of force regularly and/or up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally (with assistance) to move objects. Uses both non-powered and hand power tools.
• Frequently operates industrial trucks.
• Exposed to moving objects with risk of electric shock and occasionally exposed to vibration.
• Frequent fine manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination including handling, pinching, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, turning, and bending.
• Is assigned duties according to specified procedures. Work is checked frequently.
• Overtime hours may be required.

Qualifications/Education

• Previous Shipping/Receiving experience preferred.
• Forklift certification required.
• Able to understand basic correspondence, instructions, rules, policies, graphs, and/or charts. Able to learn from written passages by discerning the main idea or key facts. 
• Ability to perform basic arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and use basic numerical concepts (whole numbers, percentages) to complete job tasks.
• Ability to use measuring devices such as tapes and gauges.
• Vision includes acuity near and far, color, peripheral vision and depth perception.
• Hearing ability to exchange information with co-workers and management should faults/issues with material or equipment is detected and to detect situations where safety may be an issue.
