Job Summary

Welders are responsible for welding, fabricating, and assisting pipe fitters in the installation of various types of industrial pipes into piping systems. This role requires proficiency in multiple welding techniques, knowledge of piping processes, and the ability to work under varying conditions, often with short notice travel requirements throughout the United States.

Key Responsibilities

  • Select and set up welding equipment based on requirements, assembly, and welding processes based on knowledge of geometry, metal properties, and welding techniques.
  • Identify and prepare all necessary equipment for the job and ensure proper process execution.
  • Bolt, clamp, and tack-weld parts to secure them in position for final welding.
  • Cut material with powered saws to match measurements
  • Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded
  • Align components using calipers, rulers etc. and clamp pieces
  • Perform welding operations using various techniques, including arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc, or arc gas welding, as required by the project.
  • Weld metal materials to piping systems and equipment using the appropriate procedures for the specific metal types involved.
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal or overhead)
  • Adhere to safety requirements and identify any safety risks associated with welding tasks.
  • Follow the Weld Procedure Specification (WPS) and affix a stamp ID (last four digits of SSN) to each weld performed.
  • Assist pipe fitters with rigging and other tasks as needed to ensure proper installation of piping systems.
  • Assist boilermakers in tube installation, preparation, and fabrication while not actively welding.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of welding experience on industrial size and grade tube and pipe. (Schedules: 40, 80, and 160)
  • Experience in welding under various conditions (2G, 4G, and 6G).
  • Must have experience welding with multiple types of filler metals including but not limited to carbon steel alloys, stainless steel alloys, Inconel.
  • Experience in using electrical or manual tools (saws, squares, calipers etc.)

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Must have a thorough knowledge of various metals characteristic and qualities including the correct welding processes required and the effects of welding on the material.
  • Must successfully pass a tube weld test.
  • Proven ability to MIG, Stick, and TIG weld on tube and pipe.
  • Must be able to weld in tight areas and from a sky climber about 50' high from deck
  • Heavy Wall Tube Certification in GTAW and SMAW up to .620 wall thickness.
  • SMAW unlimited, GTAW unlimited, and GTAW Inconel experience at advanced levels.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, welding symbols, and technical manuals.
  • Strong understanding of the physical properties of metals and metal machining processes.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at various heights.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle challenging tasks under pressure.
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Work Location and Travel

  • The position is based on projects across the United States, with frequent travel required, often on short notice.
  • Ability to travel extensively and work in different locations as project demands.

Work Environment

  • Work is typically performed in industrial settings, often involving exposure to high temperatures, noise, and hazardous materials.
  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions (including heat, rain, cold and wind) while wearing appropriate PPE.
  • The role requires working in confined spaces, at heights, and in various body positions.
  • Must always adhere to safety protocols to minimize risks to oneself and others while performing welding tasks.

Physical Requirements

Talk/Hear: Required to communicate effectively with team members, receive instructions, and coordinate tasks to ensure safety and accuracy during welding operations.

Stand/Sit: Frequently used to perform welding tasks, operate equipment, and manipulate materials accurately in various positions and locations on the job site.

Walk: Needed to move between workstations, gather materials, inspect job sites, and coordinate with team members during welding and fabrication tasks.

Use hands/fingers to handle or feel: Required to operate welding equipment, position materials, and perform precise adjustments during welding and fabrication tasks.

Climb: Occasionally needed to access elevated work areas, perform welding tasks on high structures or equipment, and reach materials or tools stored at higher levels.

Stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl: Frequently used to access and work in confined or low-clearance areas, position materials, and perform welding tasks in tight or awkward spaces.

See: Required to inspect weld quality, read blueprints and welding specifications, align materials accurately, and ensure precise execution of welding tasks.

Carry, weight, Lift: Frequently needed to handle and position heavy materials, equipment, and components necessary for welding and fabrication tasks.

Exposure to work: Exposed to work environments with high temperatures, noise, and hazardous materials, requiring adherence to safety protocols to manage risks associated with welding operations and industrial settings.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
