When you join our corporate enablement team as a Property Accountant you are joining a passionate team dedicated to providing empowerment, support, and long-term solutions to our internal and external stakeholders so they may achieve their best and nurture belonging in our apartment communities.
You are a good fit if you have had progressively more responsible roles in public or multifamily accounting, have a strong foundational knowledge of accounting and an interest in building out processes.
This role is fully remote but is required to reside in DC/MD/VA and visit the office on occasion for training and/or meetings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Property Accounting
- Prepare timely, complete and accurate monthly financial reports under US GAAP for a portfolio of residential communities
- Create journal entries for recurring and ad hoc accruals, amortizations and reclasses
- Coordinate with operations teams to ensure that deposit accounting is completed for month end close
- Lead discussions in monthly preliminary close calls with operations teams to ensure accurate and complete financials
- Analyze monthly financial results by comparing budget to actuals for completeness of accruals
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly including reconciliation of sub ledgers to the general ledger.
- Support the external audit by working with auditors on client requests and preparing footnote schedules
- Assist operations and asset management teams with any ad hoc requests
Fixed Asset Accounting
- Create fixed assets to close out all project management jobs and submit corresponding journal entry
- Record depreciation and write-offs of disposed assets
- Perform monthly analysis of depreciation activity
- Review and submit quarterly accruals for the construction management team
- Maintain accurate job cost and project accounting records for development projects, including quarterly accruals for open costs
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2 years accounting experience. Experience with Yardi is a plus.
- Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- CPA preferred
- Goal-oriented, organized, detail oriented and driven team member.
- Understanding of Sarbanes Oxley and US GAAP reporting requirements (real estate accounting is a plus).
- Thoughtful problem-solver with the ability to identify issues and assess solutions.
- Internal desire to learn new things and discover efficiencies.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Excellent communication, reading comprehension and analytical skills.
The annual salary range for this role is $90,000-$100,000 (subject to experience).
Additional Compensation: In addition to the base salary, this role may be eligible to participate in our incentive programs which may include annual short-term and/or long-term incentives and spot awards.
