What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Internship position at Elmet Technologies LLC?
Engineering Internships Available at Elmet Technologies – Euclid, OH May – August 2025 Elmet Technologies is a leading manufacturer of the technology metals tungsten , molybdenum and niobium . We are currently recruiting candidates for Engineering Intern positions for our plant based at Euclid, OH. These positions will support the development and enhancement of new products and / or advanced processes in tungsten and molybdenum metal manufacturing using technologies such as flat rolling and powder metallurgy. Working as directed with engineers and technicians, interns will perform hands-on experiments in both manufacturing and laboratory environments. They will solve processing and material problems as they arise. They will support projects in the fields of additive manufacturing, medical, aerospace, high temperature applications and electronic materials. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to characterize and document processes that establish properties to meet or exceed current products. This includes documentation of processes through written and verbal communications. Additional responsibilities include determining potential cost savings and verifying compliance with all applicable quality requirements. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES Using Metallurgical, Mechanical and Physical techniques for characterization and bench marking. Establishing data collection for statistical evaluations and discriminating difference. Documentation of findings in both presentation and memo formats Ability to set up and run experimental tests, record observations and technical data SKILLS and COMPETENCIES Inquisitive / curiosity about validity of measurements and details on observations. Communication and organization skills; competent using Microsoft Office applications. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Student for Bachelor of Science Degree in engineering, physical or natural sciences. Interaction with teams Specific Intern Projects for 2025 Support the powder metallurgy process development and baseline process documentation of tungsten heavy alloy rods for transferring the process into operations. Support needs in characterization, reporting and logistics. Working with manufacturing technicians to establish powder compaction, sintering and mechanical working in achieving the metallurgical characteristics and mechanical properties. A key challenge will be in increasing productivity while maintaining or improving characteristics. The effort includes documentation and training of production staff. Support the process development, documentation and benchmarking of characteristics for tungsten and molybdenum foils used in computed tomography (CT) medical imaging and electronic device thermal management applications. Experiments will include flat rolling and thermal mechanical testing for developing a repeatable production process. Working with internal operators for mechanical and metallurgical characteristics including machining parameters. This will require summarizing and reporting all findings. Development support of machining techniques for pure tungsten. Experimentation with machining parameters for yielding a cost-effective material removal rate along with improved surface finish. Evaluations include the effects of geometry and coolants on tool wear will lead to optimization of machining parameters. This project includes running CNC milling tests, data collection, data analysis and Metallography. Development, design and implementation of furnace fixture for internal material processing furnaces with goal of extending life of refractory materials. Working closely with shop floor for functional designs and iterations. Evaluating the costing over the lifetime for justification of the investment. Both external and internal capabilities will be examined for establishing a baseline for mechanical properties and dimensional capabilities. The effort will focus on problem solving for establishing root causes to unsuccessful heat treatment. Additionally, cost reduction trials will be conducted for enhancing the product. Support improvement in hot rolling and powder metallurgy processing of molybdenum and pure tungsten as well as tungsten heavy alloy via benchmark characterization via mechanical and metallurgical tests. Concurrently, establishing productivity opportunities for improving yield and processing.
