To be a successful Parent Advocate you must become able to do the following always:
- Functions within Agency’s policies and procedures.
- Operates within budget.
- Work successfully with and alongside parents and clients.
- Advocate for parents in meetings and with other professionals.
- Partner with parents to assist them with self-advocacy.
- Achieves positive discharge outcomes for youth and families.
How you will spend your time in this job:
- 50% Working with Parents and youth as a parent advocate, leader, and mentor.
- 25% Advocating with leadership, staff, stakeholders, and community partners.
- 15% Advising on program practices and policies.
- 10% Meetings and trainings
To qualify for this job, you need to have:
- High school diploma or GED and be at least 21 years of age.
- Previous experience as a parent with a child who has been involved in the child welfare system or a parent with a child that has spent time in a residential placement.
- Ability to pass a background check including fingerprints and the child and adult abuse and neglect registries.
- Ability to travel, driving company or personal vehicle including at night. Ability to do occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. Able to walk upstairs. Ability to work flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends. Employee is subject to outside environmental conditions occasionally, inside conditions frequently, with protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature change.
