SUMMARY
The Controller will manage the accounting and financial reporting functions of Poole & Kent, a large Specialty Contractor, ensuring that company goals and objectives are met by maintaining the integrity of the accounting and data processing systems and by ensuring that appropriate procedures and controls are in place to maintain compliance with GAAP, SEC, company and corporate reporting requirements. This role ensures the accuracy of financial records, compliance with accounting standards, and timely reporting to support Poole & Kent’s operations and EMCOR’s regulatory requirements. The Controller will oversee project accounting, maintain internal controls, and collaborate with the CFO/CEO to provide actionable financial insights for the construction business.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Accounting Operations
- Oversee all general ledger activities, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and job costing.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing processes to ensure accurate financial records.
- Supervise an accounting team to maintain efficient workflows and adherence to deadlines.
- Financial Reporting
- Prepare the subsidiary's detailed financial statements (e.g., balance sheets, income statements, cash flow reports). Including trial balance review and reconciliations.
- Prepare monthly Florida Department of Revenue Sales Tax reports.
- Prepare annual (EMCOR subsidiary ) Tax Package. o Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and EMCOR reporting standards.
- Budgeting & Forecasting Support
- Assist the CFO/CEO in preparing annual budgets and periodic forecasts for Poole & Kent.
- Analyze variances between actual performance and budgeted figures, explaining to management any findings.
- Monitor cash flow to ensure liquidity for operational needs and project commitments.
- Construction Project Accounting
- Track and report on project Work-In-Progress, including construction contract costs, revenues, and profitability.
- Maintain accurate job cost records and reconcile them with monthly project status reports and forecasts.
- Support project managers with financial data to monitor progress and control costs.
- Internal Controls & Compliance
- Develop and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure data integrity.
- Coordinate with internal and external auditors to facilitate audits and address findings.
- Ensure compliance with tax filings, local regulations, and EMCOR company policies.
- Systems & Process Improvement
- Manage financial construction accounting software (e.g., StarBuilder.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency in financial reporting and project accounting workflows.
- Collaboration
- Work closely with the CFO/CEO to provide data and analysis for strategic decision making.
- Liaise with EMCOR’s finance team to align reporting practices and meet deadlines.
- Partner with operational leaders to ensure financial transparency across construction projects.
QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- 7 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial role. Background in construction accounting, including job costing and project-based financial management, BA/BS degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Accounting or Business and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and construction experience. CPA desirable.
- Working knowledge in construction accounting, including construction contract language, job costing and project-based financial management.
- Significant working knowledge of federal, state and local laws governing financial and accounting practices.
- Experience overseeing and leading human resources, safety and risk functions is desirable.
- Experience overseeing employee benefits administration desirable.
- P&L responsibility for $35-$40 million in revenue desired.
COMPUTER SKILLS
- Advanced computer/technical skills with various accounting applications (life cycle of the accounting and finance departments). Microsoft Office expertise, including advanced Excel skills; experience with Viewpoint a plus. Strong technical skills will also be helpful for oversight of the company IT department.
