Responsibilities/Pay Grade
Reports to the Senior Utility Service Technician. This is an entry-level classification in which incumbents learn the skills required to install, repair, and maintain fire hydrants, perform valve insertions and line-stops as part of the ECUA water distribution system.
Employes in this classification participate in a formal ECUA training and career progression program, as well as receiving on-the-job training. Incumbents assist with a variety of tasks involved in the maintenance, installation, and repair of the water distribution system's fire hydrants and valves.
Level I technicians are required to complete additional career progression training classes. Required training classes are listed under the "Career Progression" section of this job description.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assists with flushing of the potable water system.
Assists with the installation, operation, and maintenance of flush and fire hydrants.
Places hydrants in service after appropriate testing and flushing.
Performs regular preventive maintenance on fire hydrants.
Tests fire hydrant performance and logs key information into a database.
Services and paints hydrants when major repairs are not needed.
Assists with performance of valve insertions and line stops.
Assists with taps on water, performing valve insertions and wastewater mains.
Sets up and removes barricades and other warning devices to channel traffic around construction areas or other hazards.
Assists with flushing of the potable water system.
Reads and learns written material such as operation manuals and material safety data sheets.
Learns job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation in an on-the-job training setting.
All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Basic computer skills required.
Testing for reading comprehension and basic workplace math calculations, will be administered prior to an interview and/or job offer. Testing scores will be a contributing factor for selection. TABE test passing scores of: Reading - 563; Mathematics - 577; and Language - 572.
Must respond to all emergency work call-outs beyond his or her assigned shift.
Possession of a valid driver license.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
As a disaster team member, the employee is required to be available to work before, during, and after any disaster as directed.
