Registered Nurse Lead Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE:
To provide direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting and per established Federal and State laws as well as Facility policies and procedures to ensure availability, quality, and effective emergency services for all patients who present to the Facility.
To provide patient care that reflects initiative, flexibility, and responsibility in a professional manner with a minimum of supervision.
To triage safely, rapidly and accurately, every patient that presents to the Facility for emergency services.
To determine priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the Facility.
To foster a customer service centered organization and serve as a model representative of organization.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
- Minimum of five years of clinical experience in emergency department.
- Minimum of two years experience in ED nursing administration/management.
- Current Registered Nurse license (in good standing, without disciplinary actions or investigation).
- Bachelors or Masters prepared in nursing or related area.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge and experience in hospital and direct patient care in an emergency department setting.
- Effective communication skills: oral, written, and presentation.
- Ability to set one’s own schedule and manage own time
- Ability to effectively manage the activities and personnel of nursing.
- Knowledge of current matters relating to healthcare management including Continuous Quality Improvement fundamentals and activities.
- Ability to utilize resources in an organized manner.
- Effective positive interpersonal and customer relations skills via telephone and face-to-face interaction; practices positive customer relations.
- Head-to-toe assessments and knowledge of normal versus abnormal findings and reporting of abnormal findings to physician.
- Phlebotomy skills.
- Ability to perform waived lab testing.
- Prepare, administer, monitor and discontinue respiratory treatments.
- Critical thinking to intervene with appropriate intervention for urgent/emergent care; care of the acute and chronically ill patients; identifying and managing life-sustaining physiologic functions in unstable patients.
- Knowledge of hemodynamics.
- Basic IV and central line skills.
- Assist in the maintenance of equipment, supplies, and the environment.
License/Certification Required:
- Unrestricted Texas RN license.
- CPR certification required.
- ACLS certification required.
- PALS or ENPC certification required.
Physical Requirements:
- Capable of heavy work with walking and frequent lifting of 50 lbs associated with occasional lifting of patients and/or carrying up to 15 lbs.
- Spends 60-70% of time walking, standing or sitting while working with patients.
- Walks approximately 5 hours per day or more through Facility, frequently standing, bending, stooping and reaching to check or move equipment and assist patients and staff.
- Spends 30-40% of time at desk.
- Must be able to speak and hear clearly.
- Must be able to write and record numbers in fine detail, transcribe physician orders, and complete annual evaluations, accurately read labels and instructions.
- Must be able to key at computer terminal and have basic computer skills.
- Ability to perform CPR.
- Ability to organize multiple tasks daily and reprioritize tasks.
- Accommodate occasional frustration and anger on part of patients, families and physicians and fellow nursing staff.
Experience and ability in the financial, managerial, and marketing aspects of emergency medicine.
AUTHORITY:
In fulfilling the purpose of his/her job, the Nurse Lead will employ a wide range of processes and techniques, and in general has the latitude to choose methods that work best in that setting. However, the Nurse Lead is expected to understand the overall system of management of the Facility that are harmonious with the overall practice system.
The Nurse Lead’s fulfillment of responsibilities depends in part upon support from, and support of, individuals and units not shown as being accountable to him/her on the Facility’s organization chart.
The Nurse Lead has the authority to manage and direct the schedule assignments.
The Nurse Lead’s authority to act is all areas of his/her responsibility is derived from the Facility rules and regulations, administration, and Governing Board.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Clinical Activities:
- Implement and evaluate quality and standards of patient care in conjunction with the Medical Director. Oversee patient care nursing protocols, nursing policies and procedures, physician standing orders and standard discharge instructions.
- Participate in patient care activities and adheres to requirements of Registered Nurse position description when providing direct patient care.
Quality Improvement Activities:
- Achieve quality patient care by utilizing ongoing quality improvement, safety and infection control evaluation methods such as review of the medical record, analysis of medication errors and patient injuries and review of infection control responses from physicians and patient satisfaction questionnaires.
Customer Service and Public Relations:
- Maintain active professional relationships with physicians and patients by assessing needs and levels of satisfaction.
- Demonstrate a positive, friendly and courteous manner.
- Identify, measure and document or review problems, inefficiencies or deficiencies.
- Ensure effective communication with the following individuals and groups:
- Patients and their families
- Facility administration
- Medical staff
- Laboratory and radiology services and consultants
- Industry
- Civic groups
- EMS
- Managed Care Organizations and other third-party payers
Employee Lead:
- Ensure that employees of the Facility meet or exceed standards described in medical staff rules and regulations, bylaws, Facility policies, and in other appropriate local and national standards.
- Demonstrate ability to delegate and/or supervise, orient, develop, train, coach, evaluate, direct reports.
Resource and Inventory Management:
- Schedule qualified staff to provide required coverage for patient care and adhere to State guidelines.
- Evaluate and make recommendations regarding purchase of equipment.
- Ensure adequate supplies of controlled drugs, sterile supplies, instrumentation and equipment are available and within budgetary constraints and properly secured.
Regulatory Compliance:
- Comply with State, Federal and local rules and regulations.
- Comply with accreditation agency rules and regulations.
Safety:
- Maintain patient areas in safe condition as indicated by cleared hallways, secured electrical wiring.
- Report and isolate broken equipment promptly.
- Adhere to all Facility safety regulations and guidelines regarding patient safety.
Professional Requirements:
- Adhere to dress code.
- Complete annual education requirements.
- Maintain regulatory requirements.
- Report to work on time and as scheduled, complete work within designated time.
- Wear identification while on duty.
- Complete in-services in a timely fashion.
- Attend 100% of the staff meetings annually, unless your absence is approved, read and return all monthly staff meeting minutes.
- Comply with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicate the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the Facility.
