Position Summary
Indiana University Libraries is seeking an innovative, collaborative, creative, and experienced librarian to help form and lead an interdisciplinary department of fantastic librarians, professional staff, and part-time student employees as they provide both new and more traditional library services in the areas historically known as reference, information literacy, and user engagement. This department results from a merger of two departments currently known as the Scholars’ Commons and Teaching and Learning. The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of and enthusiasm for these core services but will also be able to envision how the services might need to change and adapt to new directions at the University. The successful candidate will be accomplished in guiding groups through transition.
The specific service areas overseen by this position will include….
- The Scholars’ Commons (includes the Reference Desk)
- The Makerspace Teaching and Learning (includes The Research Assistance Desk, Library Outreach, and Learning Commons)
This position will report to the Associate Dean for Research and Learning Services (R&L) and be part of the leadership team for that division of IU Libraries, along with the heads of the Access Services and subject area departments: Sciences/Social Sciences, Arts/Humanities, and Area Studies. All R&L Departments, which have a majority of faculty librarian members, have the option to participate in rotational leadership transition.
Responsibilities
- Creates and executes a collaborative vision for providing teaching and general research and reference support in the departments engaged in this work.
- Establishes a work culture reflective ofIU Libraries shared values.
- Supervises a team of 6-8 FTE librarians and staff to plan, execute, manage, promote, and assess services that support faculty teaching and faculty and student research.
- Participates actively in the day-to-day work of these departments through teaching and providing reference services.
- Collaborates effectively with other R&L Department Heads.
- Plans and leads productive meetings with concrete outcomes.
- Ensures good communication flows between upper administration and areas of supervision. Communicates regularly with internal library partners outside the R&L Division, such as Scholarly Communication, Libraries Technologies, and Electronic Resource Acquisitions units, to coordinate the provision of services.
- Oversees fund management for the reference collection fund.
- Liaises with external campus units, which are essential library partners.
- Gathers statistics and works with the assessment librarians to create reports to measure the impact of services on faculty and student research successes.
- Keeps abreast of the latest trends and best practices in information literacy and scholarly research services to enhance the libraries’ service portfolio.
- Continues professional growth through publishing, presentations, or participation and leadership in professional organizations. Serves on or chairs library, university, and professional organization committees as appropriate.
Basic Qualifications
Applicants are encouraged to think broadly and communicate how their skills and experiences transfer to the qualifications in ways that may not be obvious.
- ALA-accredited graduate degree in library or information science; candidates with an advanced degree in a relevant subject area and appropriate experience in an academic setting will also be considered
- Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in an academic library, including a successful record of management and mentoring
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication, including presentation and/or teaching and/or training skills
- Substantial experience in providing research support to students and faculty
- Substantial experience delivering instruction both face-to-face and online at the college level and ability to plan and deliver instructional programming
- Demonstrated interest or experience with outreach to students, researchers, and instructors
- Demonstrated ability to work creatively, independently, flexibly, and collaboratively in a team environment
- In-depth understanding of reference and information literacy as evidenced by an active and robust record of scholarship on these topics
- Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution
- Ability to meet the requirements of a tenure/tenure-track position at the IU Libraries (https://libraries.indiana.edu/promotion-tenure)
