Registered Nurse-Air Medical Operations

Summary:

The Flight Nurse will perform duties associated with providing emergency medical care to the sick and injured in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, and Emergent Air policies.

Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports to the Air Medical Operations Manager/Director or designated Supervisor(s)
  • Does not supervise any positions currently

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Uphold and maintain the Emergent Air Safety Culture;
  • Maintain all required licenses and certifications;
  • Maintains competency requirements by participating in on-going laboratory and clinical experiences;
  • Maintains competency in ambulance and fixed wing aircraft safety as well as competency in caring for patients in those environments;
  • Maintains competency in usage of all transport related equipment and supplies;
  • Communicates educational needs of staff;
  • Participates in education/orientation of new team members;
  • Attend all required education, training, and staff meetings;
  • Responsible for the assessment, treatment, management, control, diagnostic evaluation, and care of patients during the transport process in coordination with your partner and in accordance with Emergent Air policies and protocols;
  • Provides medical care from the initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility;
  • Serves as a flight resource to specialty care teams;
  • Actively participates as a flight team member to include shift briefings, pre/post flight briefings and follows the directions of the Pilot in command while in the flight environment;
  • Protect patient privacy in accordance with applicable laws, including HIPAA and the Emergent Air compliance plan;
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with sending and referring facilities, allied agencies, the public and other groups and institutions;
  • Completing patient care reports, physician certification statement, and all other required documentation in a timely manner;
  • Assumes responsibility for procurement and maintenance of transport supplies and equipment;
  • Responsible for the care and cleaning of the clinical components and areas of the aircraft by demonstrating infection control practices congruent with policies and procedures;
  • Complies with Emergent Air, Policy and Procedures, Medical Protocols, Company Safety Manual, Company QA/PI Plan;

Education, Knowledge & Experience:

  • Minimum of three years critical care experience, no less than 4000 hours in an ICU or an emergency department.
  • Flight experience can be substituted year over year for ER/ICU experience
  • Additional preferred experience in the applicable areas of NICU, PICU and L&D
  • Prehospital experience in all medications in BLS and ACLS, plus maintenance of continuous infusions as well as IABP management.
  • Prehospital experience in central line monitoring, left arterial wedge pressure monitoring and ventilator management.
  • Diploma, Associate or BSN
  • Current nursing licensure in the state of assigned practice
  • Current CPR, ACLS, PALS certifications
  • National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 6 months of hire
  • Basic Trauma certification (PHTLS, ITLS)
  • Advanced Trauma certification (ATLS, TNCC, TPATC) with 12 months of hire
  • Flight Certification: CFRN and/or CTRN within 24 months of hire

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. The position requires significant physical strength and dexterity and the ability to function in very adverse environments with exposure to numerous safety risks typically found at emergency scenes and in aviation environments. The following guidelines are used to describe the frequency of activities in this position:

HAZARDS: Must be able to sit for extended periods of time and tolerate the stresses of the flight environment. These stresses include: noise, vibration, low light conditions, decreased humidity, barometric pressure changes, exposure to temperature extremes and gravitational forces. Flight status requires working in proximity to aircraft inside and around running aircraft. Personnel are expected to render care to patients while outside, in uncontrolled environments, as well as assume care of patients in hospitals, clinics, etc.

Personnel are required to use cleaning products to disinfect working environments.

Visual Efforts Required

Reading documents for general understanding (correspondence & memos). (over 75%)

Reading documents for analytical purposes, reading for high degree of accuracy (contracts, medical reports and so on). (26-75%)

Viewing video display terminals (VDTs). (6-25%)

Work environment involves no physical risks or hazardous conditions.

Work environment involves slight physical risks that require following basic safety precautions.

Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following detailed safety precautions (such as wearing respirators and other personal protective equipment, and working in hazardous conditions).

Manual Dexterity Required

Advanced application of manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination (such as high volume keyboard input or operation of manually controlled equipment, and medical equipment).

Pay: $33.33 - $38.00 per hour
