The Surgery Scheduler is responsible for scheduling and posting patient surgeries. Coordinates pre-operative and post-operative appointments in an efficient and timely manner. Provides an accurate collection of patient information to facilitate the scheduling of surgery based on the priority of the patient’s need. Verifies patient insurance and eligibility status prior to the scheduled surgery date.
Qualifications and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Clinical certification preferred
- Minimum two years of patient service experience in a healthcare setting
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy
- Knowledge of lab/diagnostic tests and associated paperwork
- Working knowledge of managed care basics, and experience working with a managed care and Medicare population
- Comfortable using email, interacting with Internet applications and other computer programs- including Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of practice management and word processing software
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
- Excellent communication skills in person, in written correspondence, and over the phone
- Excellent documentation skills
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following
- Ensures timely communication with patients regarding the plan of care and scheduling of services
- Obtain accurate patient information for procedure documentation
- Work in partnership with the patient’s primary care physician or specialist to obtain medication recommendations in compliance with ASRA guidelines
- Present patients with detailed instructions, outlined in the clinical protocol related to surgery
- Maintain an open line of professional communication with the physician care team regarding patient needs
- Ensures documentation in the medical record accurately reflects patient communication and plan of care
- Obtain prior authorization for services
Other
- Follows all applicable department and practice policies and procedures
- Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA privacy and confidentiality guidelines established by the practice
- Maintains detailed knowledge of practice management and other computer software as it relates to job function
- Attends all regular meetings
- Performs other duties as required and assigned by the Manager, including schedule changes and travel to office locations as assigned
