Job Summary
- Under the general supervision of the Microbiology Supervisor and the technical guidance of a Medical Technologist performs a variety of routine and specialized diagnostic laboratory tests on environmental, blood and body fluid specimens as prescribed by physicians or healthcare providers in the technical area of Microbiology/Serology. Processes and analyzes all specimens submitted for clinical analysis by performing required tests, reporting results to appropriate personnel, and maintaining instrumentation utilized.
- Education
- Associate degree in Microbiology, Biology, Basic Sciences or Medical Laboratory Science required; OR Graduate of an approved program in Medical Laboratory Science.
- Experience
- Minimum one year of experience in all areas of the Laboratory or Microbiology Department required. New graduates from an accredited school of Medical Laboratory Technology are considered to have one year of Laboratory experience in all areas of the Laboratory.
- Licensure and/or Certification
- ASCP or NCA certification preferred. Eligible candidates will be accepted and expected to sit and pass certification exam within 6 months of employment.
- Skills
- Must have the ability to take action based on review of policies, protocols, procedures and methodologies.
- Requires knowledge of basic laboratory methods and principles of Microbiology.
- Working knowledge of automated and manual laboratory equipment.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to effect venipuncture and safely handle specimens and calibrate equipment, etc.
- Ability to solve problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.
- Good knowledge of quality control principles.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Must be able to reasonably make appropriate judgment in communications and actions with patients, physicians, outside agencies, vendors and fellow staff members.
- To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to meet expectations relative to the purpose of the position, perform each essential function satisfactorily, and pass initial orientation and annual departmental competency exams.
