School Nurse, Part-Time (4 hours/day - no benefits)

Position Purpose:
To enhance the educational potential of all students by promoting wellness and facilitating the management of health conditions that create barriers to learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement an individual plan for the care of students with chronic health conditions and disabilities and students needing treatments or medications
  • Develop individualized health plans (IHP) with specific goals, objectives, and interventions based on student health needs
  • Develop health alerts and protocols for the care of students with health needs
  • Administer medications and treatments to students per physician order and parent authorization
  • Supervise unlicensed assistant personnel in delegated and assigned healthcare
  • Promote and maintain the health and well-being of students, families, and school personnel through assessment and teaching
  • Participate on the child study team: assists in the identification of students with health conditions and disabilities, interprets health factors pertinent to the student’s disability and develops, implements, and evaluates the health component of the individual educational plan (IEP)
  • Provide training on specific or individual student health needs to teachers and other staff
  • Assist students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources
  • Participate in developing and maintaining a system for providing first aid and emergency care
  • Participate in identifying and reporting current or potential health and safety hazards for students and staff
  • Monitor immunization status and provide resources for immunizations
  • Screen for contagious diseases and provide referral and treatment information
  • Work with local health agencies to track reportable communicable diseases
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and evaluating procedures and programs to assess the health and developmental status of students
  • Identify student health needs through health assessments
  • Act as a resource and guest speaker for health education units as requested
  • Provide health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors
  • Provide in-service education opportunities for school staff on health-related issues
  • Maintain daily and yearly information regarding the utilization of school health service programs and the health status of students.
  • Initiate, maintain, and annually review student health records
  • Provide Medicaid billing for eligible services
  • Participate in developing, implementing, and evaluating nursing services goals, objectives, and procedures
  • Participate in planning programs that eliminate or minimize student health concerns that may interfere with learning
  • Develop and maintain a system of first aid, recommend school safety measures, and promote a healthful school environment
  • Prevent communicable disease
  • Assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of school children
  • Provide health education
  • Collect data and maintain records within professional and legal boundaries and school guidelines
  • Recommend school district procedures and philosophy related to the Nursing Services Program
  • Assume responsibility for continuing education and own professional development
  • Attend district in-services and meetings as directed
  • Participate in self evaluation of performance and continuing education activity
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others: contributes to the development of a positive school climate.
  • Abide by the Code of Ethics for the School Nursing Profession as established by the Idaho State Board of Education, the Board Policies and procedures of the District, and the terms and provisions of the Standard Teachers’ Contract.
  • Comply with the requirements of Idaho Code with regard to teacher and school nurse conduct, including but not limited to the manner in which suspected instances of child abuse or suspected student suicidal tendencies are addressed.
  • Adhere to confidentiality with regard to student information.
  • Attend faculty meetings and conferences as directed by the Building Principal and participate in in-service activities and other professional growth opportunities.
  • Establish and maintain good working habits including punctuality.
  • Implement the beliefs, mission statement, objectives, and parameters of the District’s strategic plan.
  • Knows and follows school policy and the chain of command.
  • Acts ethically and confidentially in all aspects of employment.
  • Performs such school-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, first aid, illnesses and injuries, nutrition, and related areas.
  • Ability to diagnose and provide care for ill or injured students.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and students with special needs.
  • Ability to follow oral and written orders from supervisors, administrators, physicians, and to coordinate work with principal, teachers, and others.
  • Ability to describe orally and in writing school health services provided, issues, and concerns regarding school health.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.

Safety Requirements:

  • Adheres to all applicable professional safety standards and practices in the nursing field, including requirements outlined in federal and state law, and Occupational Safety and Health regulations.
  • Implements Board Policy regarding Blood Borne Pathogens and other Board policies regarding the medical or health care of employees and students.

Qualifications Profile:
License or Certificate:

  • Must have a valid Idaho professional (RN) nurse license.
  • Must have Idaho State Department of Education Pupil Personnel Services certification and school Nurse endorsement.

Education:

  • Bachelor degree

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, pediatric and community health nursing preferred.
