Job Description: Ophthalmic Fellow

 

Position Overview:The Ophthalmic Fellow is a post-residency trainee who works under the supervision of experienced faculty to gain advanced knowledge and specialized skills in a subspecialty of ophthalmology. The fellow will actively participate in clinical, surgical, educational, and research activities, contributing to the delivery of high-quality patient care and advancing the academic mission of the department.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clinical Care:
    • Perform comprehensive evaluations and management of patients within the designated subspecialty (e.g., glaucoma, retina, cornea, pediatric ophthalmology).
    • Assist in outpatient clinics, inpatient consultations, and surgical procedures under faculty supervision.
    • Provide emergency and on-call coverage as assigned.
  • Surgical Training:
    • Develop advanced surgical skills by assisting in and performing procedures with faculty oversight.
    • Maintain a log of surgical cases for tracking progress and meeting credentialing requirements.
  • Education and Teaching:
    • Mentor and teach medical students and residents during clinical and surgical rotations.
    • Deliver presentations and participate in departmental conferences, journal clubs, and case discussions.
  • Research and Scholarship:
    • Engage in research projects, including data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation for publication.
    • Present findings at local, national, or international conferences.
    • Contribute to grant writing and collaborative research initiatives.
  • Professional Development:
    • Stay current with advancements in the field through literature review, workshops, and conferences.
    • Actively participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

    Qualifications:

    • Completion of an accredited ophthalmology residency program.
    • Board eligibility or certification in ophthalmology.
    • Demonstrated interest in the chosen subspecialty through prior clinical or research experience.
