The Wolfe Lab at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University seeks a highly motivated and creative Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our team. Our group focuses on monitoring and managing infectious diseases in the environment, with an emphasis on the pipeline from innovation to practice. Dr. Wolfe and her team co-lead the WastewaterSCAN program (www.wastewaterscan.org) and work with wastewater utilities and public health departments in order to advance the field of wastewater monitoring.

 

A postdoctoral position at the intersection of public health and environmental engineering for the study and practice of wastewater monitoring for infectious diseases is available at Emory University Rollins School of Public Health under the supervision of Dr. Marlene Wolfe. The postdoctoral fellow will work with an interdisciplinary, cross-institution team to support an academic-led public health program (WastewaterSCAN) and conduct research related to and building on this program. This position will have a focus on translation and communication of scientific content for departments of public health as well as a public and lay audience, along with primary research focused on sequencing of viruses in wastewater. This position is a good fit for someone with interest and experience in science communication and expertise in at least one of the following areas: 1) environmental microbiology; 2) virology; 3) bioinformatic analysis of sequence data. Previous experience with wastewater monitoring projects is not required but preferred. They will be involved in the design and execution of experiments, data analysis, manuscript preparation, and research presentations. Although not required for the position, the scholar will likely have the opportunity to contribute to grant writing. The postdoctoral fellow will be encouraged to develop new ideas that promote current research, and will prepare and publish scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. Opportunities to apply for independent funding will be available and encouraged. The initial appointment is for one year, with expected renewal if progress is satisfactory and funds are available.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION: Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career. The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc. Designs and evaluates experiments. Develops new ideas that promote current research. Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator. May be responsible for operation of specific equipment. May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff. Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee. The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available. Appointments cannot exceed five years. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., ScD., DrPH, M.D., D.V.M., DDS etc) in Environmental Health/Engineering, Microbiology, Epidemiology, Biostatistics/Statistics, Bioinformatics, Genomics, or other relevant disciplines.Candidates should have excellent scientific writing and strong oral communications skills, as well as the ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and collegially with colleagues.Experience with quantitative PCR and digital PCR and DNA and/or RNA sequencing technologies for analysis of viruses in environmental matricesAbility to conduct independent molecular biology measurementsExperience in performing statistical analyses using the R programming language or similarExperience in leading research papers and manuscripts for publication and in the development of posters and data presentations at conferences and workshopsEnthusiasm for mentoring student researchersDemonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
