A new postdoctoral fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Carlos Moreno in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia USA. Successful applicants will join our diverse and collaborative translational research team to study the genetics and biology of prostate cancer health disparities.
This position will involve carrying out experiments investigating racial disparities in mechanisms of prostate cancer metastasis. Our research program uses a multidisciplinary approach to analyze how changes in gene expression lead to prostate cancer progression, metastasis, and mortality. Our approach uses several tumor model systems, including human patient-derived cells and animal models of prostate cancer. Job duties will include experiments with cell culture models and animal models of prostate cancer, handling laboratory equipment, preparing and organizing biological samples and reagents in the lab. This postdoctoral fellow will train with Dr. Moreno, collaborators, and senior staff, and will carry out projects and duties under the supervision of Dr. Moreno. Members of our lab will have opportunities to learn more about RNAseq, spatial RNAseq, therapeutics, prostate cancer biology, epigenetics, CRISPR editing, functional genomics, and bioinformatics in team-oriented projects that involve collaborations with other urology research groups in the Departments of Urology, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Hematology and Medical Oncology, and Biomedical Engineering.
Competitive candidates will have a background in cancer, biology or genetics. Previous experience in mammalian cell culture, mouse xenografts, and/or related areas is preferred. The candidate will have the opportunity to obtain new training in bioinformatics and biostatistics, mentor students and other trainees, and contribute to manuscripts and grant applications. The preferred candidate will have a PhD in a cancer-relevant field, excellent written/verbal English communication skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while being a team player.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
- Uses independent judgment to design and conduct experiments. May assist in protocol design and development.
- Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.
- Plans and schedules research procedures.
- Analyzes and interprets results of studies.
- Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.
- Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.
- Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.
- Performs related responsibilities as required.
- Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field. Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills. The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues. Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD with laboratory experience.
