The Carter Center is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, nongovernmental organization founded in 1982 in Atlanta, GA, by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, in partnership with Emory University. SUMMARY:

The Senior Associate Director, Lead, Major Gifts reports to the Director of Individual Giving and is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for marketing new and existing programs of The Carter Center and achieving specific goals and objectives in support of select Programs. Working with the Director and other Development staff, the Lead manages fundraising for a portfolio of domestic and international projects.

 

The role requires significant short and long-term donor funding strategies to develop resource mobilization aligned with annual budgets, as well as sound supervisory and coaching abilities which cultivate a thriving team. Donors primarily consist of individuals but also include foundations, donor-advised funds, and family offices.

 

Up to 30% travel required domestically and internationally, as well as Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT).

 

FORMAL JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Researches and identifies donor prospects and recommends realistic strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.Interacts with donors, making and responding to inquiries.
  • Develops and implements the fundraising strategies for Major Gifts.
  • Supervises a team of development staff who are responsible for fundraising and grants management for select Carter Center projects, and designs strategies and sets implementation goals and objectives for their team.
  • Writes and ensures the submission of timely and compelling proposals and complex narrative and financial reports, working with staff across the Center.
  • Assists the Director in the annual plan and budgeting process for the Individual Giving Unit.
  • Serves as a liaison with senior staff of other Development departments (Peace Programs Development, Health Programs Development, Individual Giving, Stewardship, Events, Annual Fund, Leadership Gifts, Direct Mail/Marketing and Planned Giving). 
  • Oversees the development and preparation of top-quality briefing materials for Development meetings/trips; especially those involving senior officers of the Center. 
  • Participates in presentations and events to increase awareness of Carter Center programs and meet new potential donors. Works to ensure comprehensive follow-up at the conclusion of donor meetings.
  • Maintains donor reporting calendar, creates proposals and reports, and assists with record keeping in Raiser’s Edge.
  • Coordinates donor experiences via events with other Development units including Carter Center Weekend, Annual Fund, Leadership Giving, and Planned Giving. Designs and leads fundraising trips with program directors and staff.
  • As the direct supervisor of the Staff Secretary of the Board of Councilors, provides direction and oversight of the Board of Councilors events, membership, and strategies.
  • Partners with program staff, finance, and communications to plan and execute cultivation events in Atlanta and across the continental U.S., including the quarterly Board of Councilors meetings.
  • Performs related responsibilities, as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor's degree and eight years of experience in higher education, development, fundraising, or related field, OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree and a minimum of six years in fundraising for a non-profit organization.
  • Deep knowledge of Carter Center programs, processes and procedures for donor management and financial allocations.
  • Experience closing gifts of $100,000 plus and $1M plus from prospects.
  • Must have a solid understanding of program budget development and financial reporting, as well as experience collaborating with program and finance staff.
  • Awareness of trends in philanthropy and up to date on global affairs.
  • Strong travel and event planning experience.
  • Experience working with various technologies including advanced knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite, mass email applications, database and project management software, and CRM systems.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving skills with attention to detail, the ability to work with ambiguity, navigate a complex work environment, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively to achieve goals with a commitment to delivering exceptional customer service.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as effective presentation skills.
  • Strong knowledge and appreciation of other cultures. Must have the ability to develop consensus among diverse constituents.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to The Carter Center on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs.  Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines.  All non-exempt employees must reside within the state of Georgia.
