Position Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician gathers important medical information; performs visual screening and diagnostics prior to provider’s visit with patients.
Essential Functions
An individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily with or without accommodation. The requirements listed below are representative, but not all inclusive, of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Responsibilities
- Greets patient and introduces self prior to eye exam
- Completes a detailed patient history which includes: past medical history, family medical history, medication history, and the chief complaint
- Checks patient’s uncorrected and/or corrected visual acuity for distance and near
- Neutralizes eye glasses with a manual Lensometry.
- Performs Auto-Refraction prior to MD or OD exam as needed.
- Performs one or more of the following exams: Ishihara Color Vision, Stereo, Amsler and Titmus stereo testing
- Performs Humphrey Visual Field
- Performs Confrontational Visual Fields (CVF), Extra Ocular Movements (EOMS) Performs subjective refraction: cross cylinder technique
- Performs angle assessment and pupil assessment prior to dilating patient
- Performs Applanation, Tono-Pen tonometry or iCare tonometry on a patient
- Performs corneal Pachymetry (appropriate according to specialty)
- Performs corneal Topography accurately and is able to troubleshoot poor readings or machine difficulties (appropriate according to specialty)
- Knowledge of routinely used office surgical instruments, such as Vannas scissors, Jeweler’s forceps, punctal dilators and lid specula
- Performs eye irrigation if instructed by MD/OD
- Ability to insert and remove both a soft and hard contact lens
- Performs eye patching as instructed by MD/OD
- Assist in minor procedures and surgery as needed
- Ensures that patient’s chart is put up in a timely fashion after technician screening process is complete
- Responsible for care, maintenance and stocking of assigned room(s)
- Attend required staff and educational meetings as requested
- Maintains strictest confidentiality at all times
- Performs related work as required
- Abides by the policies and procedures of the clinical department
- OSHA/Hand washing
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Minimum one (1) year medical office experience
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Talents
- OSC Certification (can be obtained after hire date)
- OA Certification (required after 90 days of employment)
- COA Certification (required by 18 months of employment)
- Excellent communication skills
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Talents
- Bilingual in English and Spanish
- Medical Assistant certification or applicable experience
- Previous experience as a scribe
- COT and/or COMT Certification
- Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the eye
- Knowledge of both the theory and the workings behind specific testing
- Knowledge of systemic diseases and their impact on the eyes
- Knowledge of the ocular diseases of the techs assigned specialty
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, speak and hear
- Sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds
