Empire State University is currently seeking an Assistant/Associate Professor of Game Art and Design in our School of Arts and Humanities. The Department of Arts and Media is home to award-winning faculty across creative writing, digital media arts, game art and design, performing arts, visual arts and design, and interdisciplinary arts.

As a pioneer in online education, our department leads the way in reimagining studio practice and creative development in digital learning environments. Our bachelor's degree in game art and design integrates state-of-the-art approaches to online arts education while preparing students for dynamic careers in the gaming industry. We are at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) applications across our curriculum, teaching AI literacy, and empowering students to engage critically, creatively, and ethically with emerging technologies in game art & design.

We seek a dynamic artist-educator who will develop and teach online courses and independent studies in game art and design, serving learners across New York State, nationally, and worldwide. The Assistant/Associate Professor of Game Art and Design will collaborate closely with faculty from the Digital Media Arts program to develop and teach a dynamic curriculum that spans across game art and design, interactive media, and digital media arts. You will guide students through the process of creating advanced game art and design projects while integrating both theory and practice. The role involves developing innovative course content, mentoring students, conducting research, pursuing creative work, and contributing to our department's ongoing excellence in online teaching and learning while demonstrating a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative community of arts and media faculty shaping the future of arts education. Engagement in an active creative and research agenda and ongoing service to the university are expected. SUNY Empire supports faculty as they pursue scholarly work and professional development activities that enhance their teaching, research, and creative practice.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach a range of courses in Game Art and Design, such as Programming for Game Design, Narrative Design for Games, Game Design and Development, Creating Communication & Meaning in Virtual Game Worlds, Character Design & 3D Modeling, Worldbuilding & Sound Design, History of Games: Story, Myth, and Cultural Impact, Game Design Workshop, Game Design Internship, and Capstone in Game Art and Design.
  • Collaborate closely with the Digital Media Arts faculty to ensure curriculum cohesion and integration between the Game Art and Design and Digital Media Arts programs.
  • Engage in active research and/or creative work relevant to game art and design and related disciplines.
  • Mentor and advise students from diverse backgrounds, assisting them in their educational and professional development.
  • Contribute to curriculum development and innovation in game art and design education, including AI literacy and AI applications in gaming.
  • Collaborate with industry and academic partners to enhance the program's relevance and impact.
  • Participate in service to the department, university, and professional communities.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university in in Game Art and Design, Digital Media Arts, Game Design, Computer Science, Interactive Media, or related field.
    • Candidates with master's degrees in a related area and a doctoral degree in an affiliated but not directly aligned field will be considered.
  • College or university level teaching experience.
  • Experience with supporting diverse populations.
  • Ability to work in a distributed faculty environment.
  • Demonstrable college-level teaching experience and a strong portfolio showcasing expertise in game art and design with knowledge of both 2D and 3D game development pipelines.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya, Adobe Creative Suite, Unity, Unreal Engine, 3DS Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools used in game art and design.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with teaching and mentoring in online learning environments.
  • Experience with academic program development.
  • Relevant industry and/or field experience.
  • Understanding of learning assessment and pedagogical approaches in creative fields.
  • Fluency with artificial intelligence applications in game design and development.
  • Cross-disciplinary expertise in one or more of the following areas: digital media arts, visual art & design, Artificial Intelligence.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.

Special Information

  • Occasional travel will be required to fulfill university-wide commitments.
  • Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs.
  • Some evening and/or weekend engagement with students is required.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.

Rank/Salary: Tenure-track, assistant/associate professor, appointment and salary to commensurate with experience and qualifications.
