Role Overview
Emporia is seeking a Sr. Vice President of Engineering to lead and expand our engineering organization across multiple departments, including firmware, electrical, power systems, mechanical, test, compliance, and program management. This executive leader will play a pivotal role in driving product innovation, ensuring cross-functional collaboration, and overseeing the full product development lifecycle from concept to production to sustaining. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in designing, developing and bringing consumer electronics to market and a strong track record of managing high-performing engineering teams in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Firmware Engineering: Lead the development of embedded systems and firmware architecture for Emporia’s smart energy products.
- Electrical: Oversee electrical design and development, ensuring product reliability, manufacturability, and performance.
- Power Systems and Controls: Oversee Power Systems and Controls development, ensuring product reliability, manufacturability, and performance.
- Mechanical Engineering: Oversee hardware and mechanical design, ensuring product reliability, manufacturability, and performance.
- Test Engineering: Establish best-in-class test processes to ensure product quality and robustness.
- Compliance: Ensure adherence to industry standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., UL, FCC, ENERGY STAR, SAE, ISO).
- Program Management: Implement robust project management methodologies to ensure on-time, on-budget product launches. Must have a solid understanding of scheduling to mitigate risks.
- Technical Leadership: Drive the strategic direction of Emporia’s engineering efforts, ensuring alignment with business goals and market needs.
- Product Development: Oversee the end-to-end engineering process, from early-stage concept development to manufacturing and deployment, ensuring high-quality, cost-effective solutions.
- Team Leadership & Growth: Recruit, mentor, and develop engineering teams, fostering a positive culture that yields an environment of high performance with minimal turnover.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with Product, Operations, Sales, and Customer Support teams to translate customer needs into technical solutions.
- Vendor & Partner Engagement: Manage relationships with suppliers, manufacturers, and technology partners to ensure seamless integration and production scaling.
- Technology & Market Trends: Stay ahead of emerging trends in EV charging, energy management, and IoT trends to maintain Emporia’s competitive edge.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Engineering) or Physics. Master’s degree preferred.
- 15 years of engineering experience, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
- Proven expertise in managing the development and sustaining engineering efforts of consumer electronics solutions.
- Strong background in managing firmware development for microcontrollers.
- Experience leading engineering teams across multiple disciplines, including firmware, hardware, test, mechanical, compliance, and program management.
- Deep understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements for energy and EV products.
- Demonstrated ability to scale engineering organizations and deliver high-quality products to market.
- Strong project management skills, with experience in various development methodologies.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with EVSE (Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment), bidirectional charging technologies, V2H, and V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) technologies.
- Knowledge of cloud-connected IoT devices, data analytics, and mobile applications.
- Experience launching new electronic products with contract manufacturers.
