JOB SUMMARY:
Under moderate direction of the System Director Lab & Pathology Services, collects laboratory specimens by venipuncture, capillary puncture, and arterial puncture for subsequent testing and collects throat culture specimens. Performs additional basic laboratory procedures under close direction of techs as proficiency is demonstrated and documented. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs comprehensive phlebotomy skills for subsequent test procedures.
- Provides collection instructions for outpatients.
- Performs basic test procedures as designated by the Laboratory Director and/or supervisors following appropriate training and documentation of proficiency.
- Performs comprehensive computer skills per established protocol to ensure appropriate and timely transmission of test results.
- Processes reference laboratory specimens and reports to ensure accurate test requests and report delivery.
- Performs general clerical and office functions to support technical and supervisory staff.
- Processes specimens upon receipt from in-house and outreach areas and assures proper distribution for testing.
- Prepares registration forms for all clinic and reference areas once received for proper distributions to billing medical records and other aid areas that need record of this info.
- Performs proper documentation of assigned monitors in area of daily assignment and others as assigned through performance improvement, to enhance in-patient and out-patient quality and satisfaction.
- Maintains a high level of knowledge on collection procedures and proper ordering methods to assist and instruct in-house and reference areas on proper collection of specimen and using proper transportation to the lab.
- Continuing education on changes in insurance protocols and collection procedures and individual doctors “recurring order” needs as to give the highest quality of service possible.
- Performs point of care testing following appropriate training and documentation of proficiency.
- Assist lab preceptor in training new Associates as needed.
- Considers the age of the patient served, applies knowledge of growth and development and age-specific techniques through the life span (neonates/infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics) in planning and implementing care.

WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Works standard work week with overtime as necessary. Staffing may require alteration to regularly scheduled shift. Moderate to heavy physical exertion. Potential exposure to laboratory chemicals that may be toxic, caustic, or flammable. Moderate stress level. Numerous phone calls and interruptions. The task of this job involves exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissues. Must be able to move or position 50 lbs. independently.
CONTACTS WITH OTHERS:
Frequent direct patient contact. Contact with physicians, visitors, family members, Associates, and in outpatient area with Radiology and EKG Associates.
EQUIPMENT USED/SPECIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:
Works with specimen collection devices including needles, syringes, and vacutainers. Uses centrifuge and basic laboratory tools. Good patient interaction skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR EQUIVALENTS:
Education: High School Diploma or GED. CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) certification or equivalent educational background or completion of Medical Assistant program preferred.
Experience: Computer skills, Medical Terminology preferred.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR REGISTRATIONS:
Certification by approved educational program required.
Shift: 3rd Shift
Compensation: $14.82-$22.22 per hour based on total years of experience. 12.5% night shift differential. 5% weekend shift differential.
