Position Summary

This is the intermediate level of the Business Energy Advisor (BEA) classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems, in business energy areas of specialization, with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is complex and varied. The purpose of the Business Energy Advisor is to develop and nurture long-term relationships with Small/Medium and Large business customers, introduce and cross-sell Duke Energy Products and Services to these customers, and close/win customer projects for energy efficiency, transportation electrification, demand response, clean energy and outdoor lighting.

Responsibilities

  • Developing, nurturing and maintaining long-term customer relationships.
  • Pipeline/database management using CRM.
  • Team collaboration/meetings.
  • Internal/external trade shows, presentations and stakeholder engagement.
  • Promote and assist customers with navigating and benefiting from all the of the company’s products and services.
  • Work closely and in collaboration with internal staff including large account, community relations and economic development managers to cross-promote products and services to their customers while providing essential support to ensure success.
  • Working with commercial and industrial customers with an emphasis on qualifying prospective customers, eligible equipment, and projects both in and out of the Duke Energy service.
  • Providing the customer with top-notch support throughout the process, which may include qualifying equipment, identifying the best fit program for the project, providing Trade Allies resources to perform the work as applicable, discussing opt-in when it applies, and helping the customer with their application(s) to ensure the customer has a positive experience from start to finish.
  • Collecting usage and billing data, building and site information, equipment information, and details of project scope in order to help the customer find the product and service that best suits their needs.

Required/Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or other related technical field (sustainability, energy engineering, energy efficiency, etc)
  • 3 years related work experience.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • In addition to desired degree, 5 years related work experience.
  • Certified Energy Manager, CEM or related AEE certification.
  • Experience using a CRM, especially Salesforce.
  • Energy management or energy efficiency experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Facility/Technical - understanding building envelope and equipment. What drives energy related costs and how energy efficiency drives costs down.
  • Utility/Systems/Products – General utility knowledge including but not limited to Billing systems, Distribution systems, Utility rate structure, Basic knowledge of EE technologies Energy Efficiency and other products & services. Due to the technical nature of the products, basic understanding of commercial buildings and electrical loads are helpful.
  • Sales/Customer – Capable Customer interaction experience.
  • Be able to juggle deadlines, follow-up, and varying types of calls to and from different industries, including schools, healthcare, biotechnology, municipalities, retail, warehousing, and others.
  • Promote a collaborative atmosphere through their actions within their own department, as well as with other departments, to ensure mutual success and as well as superior customer experience.
  • Working knowledge of Salesforce or similar CRM.
  • Maintain accurate sales records/documentation.
  • Knowledge of the utility industry.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software tools and demonstrated ability to learn new systems.
  • Sales and/or customer facing experience.
  • Comfort level with public speaking.
  • Solid phone skills.
  • Self-starter.
  • Proven ability to organize and manage large volumes of information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment to achieve shared goals.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to interact effectively.

Mobility Classification

  • Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
