JOB SUMMARY:
Makerspace Assistants play a crucial role in supporting Makerspace Instructors in facilitating STEAM-focused lessons and hands-on activities for students in elementary, middle, and high school settings. They assist in guiding students as they explore creative and technical skills using makerspace tools and equipment, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and design software. Makerspace Assistants foster a safe and engaging learning environment by providing hands-on support and assisting with daily operations and equipment maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in facilitating STEAM-based lessons and activities, incorporating makerspace tools such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC milling, and design software.
- Help guide students through robotics, coding, and arts and crafts projects.
- Support instructors in teaching design and modeling software (e.g., Fusion 360, TinkerCAD), assisting students in creating prototypes and designs.
- Operate and help maintain makerspace equipment, ensuring tools are in proper working condition and following safety protocols.
- Assist in preparing lesson plans, activity materials, and equipment in advance, adapting content to fit the needs of various students and age groups.
- Provide active supervision during activities, ensuring student safety and participation.
- Help students troubleshoot technical challenges and refine their fabrication methods.
- Assist in maintaining attendance records and monitoring student progress.
- Communicate student needs or challenges to the Site Lead or Makerspace Program Specialist.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay updated on advancements in STEAM education and makerspace technology.
- Substitute in the Makerspace Instructor role when necessary.
EDUCATION and REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years of age or older with proof of a High School diploma or G.E.D.
- Previous experience with makerspace tools (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines) and design software is a plus.
- Familiarity with fabrication techniques, prototyping, and materials science is desirable.
- Prior experience working with youth in instructional, mentorship, or childcare roles is preferred.
- Strong communication skills in English (bilingual English/Spanish is a plus).
- Ability to speak and write in a manner appropriate for a school setting.
BACKGROUND CHECK/TESTING/CERTIFICATION:
- Must pass Live Scan (criminal background check via fingerprinting).
- Provide a clear Tuberculosis test.
- CPR/First Aid Certification is preferred.
TRAVEL:
- Travel between school sites may be required; a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are necessary.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in supervising groups of students during makerspace activities.
- Help maintain a structured environment by supporting instructors in ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to engage in physical activities, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
- Comfortable working in a hands-on, dynamic environment, including noisy classrooms or makerspaces.
