Position Overview
We are seeking a passionate and creative Part-Time Sculpting Instructor to join our team. This position is ideal for a skilled artist with a strong background in sculpture and teaching, who is eager to inspire and mentor students in the visual arts. As the Sculpting Instructor, you will have the opportunity to work with students to develop their skills in sculpting, using various materials, and expressing themselves through three-dimensional art.
Key Responsibilities:
- Instruction: Teach sculpting classes to students, providing clear instruction on various techniques, materials, and tools used in sculpture (e.g., clay, wire, plaster, wood, etc.).
- Lesson Planning: Develop engaging and educational lesson plans that align with school standards and foster creative exploration in sculpture.
- Student Support: Offer individualized guidance and feedback to students, helping them develop their skills, creativity, and confidence in sculpting.
- Class Management: Ensure the class is organized, safe, and well-maintained, with all materials and tools ready for use.
- Assessment: Monitor and assess student progress, providing constructive feedback and support to help students meet their artistic goals.
- Collaboration: Work with other art instructors and school staff to integrate sculpture into broader curriculum goals and school events.
- Demonstration: Lead demonstrations of various sculpting techniques to help students understand the process and the creative possibilities within sculpture.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in sculpting with a strong portfolio demonstrating a variety of techniques and materials.
- Previous experience teaching art, especially sculpting in both traditional and digital sculpting, to students of various ages and skill levels (preferred).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and engaging manner.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with students and staff.
- Commitment to fostering a creative, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and best practices for working with sculpting materials and tools.
- A degree in Fine Arts, Sculpture, Art Education, or a related field is preferred but not required.
Work Schedule:
- This is a part-time position, requiring 3-5 hours of work per day, 190 days per school year (school year calendar).
- The schedule may vary based on class times and school events, with potential evening or weekend hours for special events or exhibitions.
Background Check/Testing/Certification:
- Must pass Live Scan (criminal background check via fingerprinting).
- Provide a clear Tuberculosis test.
- CPR/First Aid Certification preferred.
Physical Demands:
- Standing and Walking: The instructor will be required to stand for extended periods, sometimes up to several hours per day, to demonstrate sculpting techniques, monitor students, and manage the studio environment.
- Lifting and Carrying: Ability to lift and carry art materials, tools, and supplies, which may weigh up to 25-30 lbs (e.g., blocks of clay, bags of plaster, art materials).
- Manual Dexterity: Strong hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills are necessary for working with sculpting tools and materials (e.g., carving, molding, shaping, and assembling sculptures).
- Bending and Kneeling: The role may require frequent bending, crouching, or kneeling to work at tables or on the floor with students or while demonstrating techniques.
- Repetitive Motion: Instructors may engage in repetitive motions such as molding, carving, and shaping clay, which may involve prolonged use of hands, fingers, and wrists.
- Visual Acuity: Close attention to detail and the ability to assess students' work for precision and quality, requiring good vision and the ability to focus on intricate tasks.
- Use of Tools and Equipment: Comfort with using a variety of sculpting tools, including knives, wire, hammers, chisels, and other studio equipment.
- Environmental Conditions: Work may involve exposure to dust, clay particles, and other materials used in sculpture. Proper ventilation and safety measures should be followed to minimize exposure to fumes and dust.
- Mobility: Ability to move around the studio and assist students with their work at various workstations or art tables.
