The Behavior Intervention Specialist supports youth for whom behavioral challenges present barriers to academic success. Through observation and assessment, the person in this role will determine the causes of youth behaviors and create individualized intervention plans that allow each student to fully engage in academic and social-emotional learning. In collaboration with program staff, the Behavior Intervention Specialist will also develop and implement classroom and program-wide management strategies to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Meet with each youth enrolled in the identified EnCompass Program; learn more about the youth and how the position might support his / her needs throughout the program
- Observe and assess student behavior; develop tier 2 intervention plans, when appropriate
- Facilitate communication between students, parents, and staff for the purpose of supporting behavior plans and interventions, solving problems, and / or resolving conflicts
- Develop social-emotional learning lesson plans for small and large groups
- Collaborate with the program coordinator and other program staff to implement social emotional curriculum to engage youth; push into classrooms to teach small and large group classes on social-emotional learning topics such as effective communication, connecting with peers, conflict resolution, etc.
- Engage with students during out-of-classroom time (e.g. breakfast and lunch periods) to build relationships and promote positive social interaction
- Follow up with family members, school partners, or community partners when situations arise that require their awareness or involvement
- Provide a safe environment for students should they need to be removed from the classroom
- Conduct conflict resolution and peer mediation sessions
- Serve as a consultant to administrators, teachers, and parents who might need support working effectively with youth
- Continuously supervise students to ensure a safe, non-threatening, nurturing environment where students can thrive
- Participate in team meetings to discuss the needs and progress of individual students and share strategies that foster engagement
- Enter student / family contact and other data into EnCompass database
- Attend all required professional development opportunities, as determined by Program Administrator
- Perform other duties assigned by the employee’s supervisor
