Britannica is in search of a talented mapping specialist who will be responsible for creating and coordinating the creation of a wide range of editorial and institutional maps and interactive map content for Britannica.com. Curiosity and creativity are essential for this position, as is the ability to create content suitable for listening, watching, and interacting. This position also demands a strong understanding of Britannica’s editorial standards and vision as well as the ability to translate them to multiple formats, including new interactive forms of media. The cartographer will also be expected to explore new directions in content creation and to collaborate with multiple internal teams from development to implementation of new content-driven interactives to expand Britannica’s audience.
This candidate will work with experienced media professionals at one of the world’s most trusted sources of knowledge and a leading provider of curricula to students and lifelong learners from around the world. From its proud history as the publisher of encyclopedias, Britannica has grown into a web-based education and consumer information company serving trusted media to a growing audience.
Specific Interactive Designer duties include:
- Collect, analyze, interpret, and integrate geographic information and data to create and update maps for editorial and educational purposes.
- Collect, analyze, interpret, and integrate data sources to create charts, infographics, and interactives for editorial and educational purposes.
- Maintain a deep knowledge of existing map, flag, infographic and interactive databases and update/revise as necessary.
- Strong understanding of cartographic design principles including map projections, thematic and statistical mapping, color and symbology theory, topographic and reference mapping, typography, and data generation.
- Flexibility to work independently and as part of a team to create maps, charts, infographics, and interactives.
- Proficient in using mapping and design software including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Animate, MaPublisher, QGIS, Articulate Storyline 360, and Infogram.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and design principles.
SUMMARY OF QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience: Degree in either programming, design, cartography, or related areas with at least two years of experience creating and coordinating the creation of custom maps.
Skills/Knowledge: Strong interactive design; understanding of html and java script, and interactive engines; excellent organizational skills; successful, proven collaborator; dedicated to getting things right; attentive to details; able to change focus quickly when priorities change; comfort with juggling multiple projects at once.
Other Requirements: Proficient in MaPublisher, QGIS, Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite including Illustrator, Photoshop, and Adobe Animate. Google docs and spreadsheet. Work within Britannica’s custom CMS. Understanding of interactive platforms such as Articulate 360, Adobe Animate, or Infogram.

Salary : $50,000 - $75,000
